Excerpt from The Lives of the Popes in the Early Middle Ages, Vol. 3 Of the various annals, the most important are the third part of the annals of Bertin, written by Hincmar of Rheims, and cited as his. A very curious work, already quoted, is the Libellas dc imp. M. 111 Urbe Roma, generally supposed to have been written in the middle of the tenth century, but which Lapetre (jean who has submitted it to a very critical examination, has, it would seem, proved to be the produc tion of a Lombard, probably of Rieti, who wrote it in 897 or 898 in the inbercsts of the imperial, royal, and ducal house of Spoleto. Ap. P. L, t. 129, under the name of Eutmpius, and in t. 139. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Lives of the Popes in the Early Middle Ages, Vol. 15 Sources. - Unfortunately no contemporary biography of Alexander IV. has come down to us, and equally unfortunately the greater part of his Register is not yet in print, though C. Bourel de la Ronciere published the letters of the first two years (1254-6) as far back as 1902 (Paris). This latter misfortune is, however to a considerable extent minimized by the publications of Rodenberg (Epp. e regestis Rom. Pont., vol. iii), Bliss (Calendar of Papal Registers), Theiner, etc. - publications which have been noticed in previous volumes. L. Delisle, moreover, found in the Bibliotheque nationale at Paris, a fragment of the Register of the last year of Alexander's pontificate, Dec. 12, 1260 - May 25, 1261, the day of his death. It is a fragment of the seventh book of his Register, which corresponded with the seventh year of his reign, and is an original copy of the beginning of that book. It contains some forty-six bulls or letters of which Delisle printed a brief analysis. Till this was published, most of them were inedited, only five of them having been analysed by Potthast. In connexion with the documents issued by the papal chancellary in the days of Alexander, we may note that a very large proportion of them is concerned with privileges of every kind for different religious Orders, with the Teutonic Knights and crusades against the pagan Prussians and Livonians, with the Inquisition and the treatment of heretics, and with the granting of indulgences. The indulgences granted are generally for forty or a hundred days. Once at least an indulgence of a year was granted, and this was in connexion with a home for the blind (Potthast, 17934). Excerpt from The Lives of the Popes in the Early Middle Ages, Vol. 1 The history of many of the later popes has indeed been well treated of by Ranke, whose work has long been before the English public. In more recent years Creighton has written on the Popes of the Reformation Period, and still more recently has the history of the popes from the fifteenth century onwards been most admirably and fully penned by Dr. L. Pastor, whose splendid biographies of the Popes of the later Middle Ages are now being published in an English translation by Kegan Paul co. Excerpt from The Lives of the Popes in the Early Middle Ages, Vol. 11 IT was stated on a previous page of this work that, with the approach of the thirteenth century, the amount of material available for the history of the Popes becomes so great that it is impossible to treat, within reasonable limits, of their relations with all the different countries with which they came in contact. It was, therefore, further stated that, apart from special circumstances, attention would in the future have, for the most part, to be confined to the unfolding of papal intercourse with the Empire and with the British Isles. Excerpt from The Lives of the Popes in the Early Middle Ages, Vol. 4 IF edification were the sole, or even the principal, object which I had in view in undertaking to write the biographies of the Popes of the early Middle Ages, I might perhaps have hesitated about publishing the present series. But I wish to pursue a higher end than that of indulging in a style of historical writing which is supposed to be calculated to edify a certain type of mind. I would fulfil what I regard as a command laid upon me by the late glorious Head of the Church, and strive to make known the history of the Popes of Rome. And, as it was a cardinal maxim with Leo XIII. That truth would not injure the Church, I am convinced that he would not have had the Lives of some Popes written and the Lives of others left unrecorded, nor would he have wished to see some of their deeds blazoned forth and others buried in eternal oblivion. Excerpt from The Lives of the Popes, Vol. 10: In the Early Middle Ages Sources. - The most important source for the Life of Alexander III. is his biography by his favourite cardinal, the Englishman Boso, whose historical writings we have already discussed. This Life, which is the last of the collection which forms the Liber Pontificalis, is unfortunately somewhat incomplete. Boso's last illness and death prevented him from carrying it beyond April 9, 1178. It may be read ap. Duchesne, L. P., ii. 397 ff.; Watterich, ii. p. 377 ff.; R. I. SS., iii. pt. i. p. 448 ff. It was wrongly assigned by Muratori to the cardinal of Aragon, the Dominican Nicholas Roselli (1362), who published an edition of the L. P. The bulls, etc., of Alexander are naturally extremely valuable. Though, like those of nearly all his predecessors, his register has almost wholly perished, fortune has been kind to the correspondence of Alexander, and vol. 200 of the Pat. Lat. contains more than 1500 of his letters, and over 100 of others addressed to him. But a glance at the Regesta of Jaffe will show that since the Abbe Migne published his collection (1855), Loewenfeld (Epp. Pont. Rom., Leipzig, 1885), Pflugk-Harttung (Acta Pont. Rom. inedita, Tubingen, 1881 ff.), Kehr("Papsturkunden Italiens" in Nachrichten der K. Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften zu Gottingen: philolhistor.
