Excerpt from The Life of William McKinley, Vol. 1 Secretary to the President, was associated with him more intimately than any other man, kept a close lookout for biographical material. With a thorough ness and care seldom if ever equaled, he treasured all the official and private correspondence, documents of every description, memoranda in the President's handwriting, drafts of speeches and messages, re ports of telephone conversations, photographs, pam phlets, and countless other items of interest. In addition he preserved his own shorthand notes of occasional remarks made by the President, and kept a diary in which were recorded, from a peculiarly intimate point of view, all the daily happenings of importance, in the White House, at Canton, or in the trains which carried the President to various parts of the country. Excerpt from In Memoriam, William McKinley, September 14, 1901, Vol. 1 The seventy millions of this great nation are bowed to-day in the deepest grief, and around this vast household of affliction the civilized world gathers in a loving sympathy, such as no historian has ever recorded, such as no prophet has dared to foretell. Presidents have died in office before. On the fourth of April, 1841, William Henry Harrison was struck down by disease after an official career of one short month. On the ninth of July, 1850, Zachary Taylor obeyed the summons of the stern monarch, leaving with his last breath this noble testimony, "I have always done my duty. I am ready to die." Within the memory of most of this congregation, Abraham Lincoln, in the hour of his grandest triumph and richest honors, fell by the shot of an assassin April 14, 1865; and on September 19, 1881, James A. Garfield, the Christian, the scholar, the eloquent statesman, died from the shot of a worthless vagabond, just when there were opening before him vast possibilities of usefulness. And now again by the hand of a dastardly crime our President has fallen; fallen in an hour of unprecedented prosperity, when peace had crowned the labors of four years, so patiently, so faithfully, so prayerfully performed. Excerpt from American Boys' Life of William McKinley But at last came the time when he stood free to accept the highest office within the gift of the American people. He was made President amid the good wishes of all mem bers of his party, and later on was elected a second time by an increased vote, which showed that many who had formerly op posed him were now his supporters. Thus it was that this unknown boy, this humble soldier, this obscure lawyer, climbed the ladder of success from the very bottom to the very top, rung by rung, toiling faith fully, conscientiously, and with a strong religious conviction that as long as he did what was right he had no reason to fear for the future. This alone is a lesson which every American youth will do well to remember. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Life of William McKinley, Vol. 2 The second reason for making haste Slowly was a Change of administration in Spain that gave birth to a new hope of final adjustment without war. On the 8th of August, 1897, Sefior Canovas del Castillo, the strong-armed autocrat of Spain, was assassinated by an anarchist. It was his blind obstinacy, assisted by the fierce vindictiveness of his emissary, Weyler, that had brought the Cuban situation to a crisis from which recovery was impossible. Canovas was succeeded as Prime Minister, though not until October 4, by Praxedes Mateo Sagasta, one of the leaders in the revolution of 1868 and a man of far more liberal spirit. The order for the recall of Wey ler followed five days later. A programme of reforms was adopted and a new scheme of autonomy for Cuba devised. Of this welcome change, Mr. Mc Kinley said in his message of December 6, 1897. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Life of William McKinley Twenty-Fifth President of the United States My excuse for placing this brief biography of the late President McKinley before the public is that there is a demand for just such a work. While there are several extended biographies and a multitude of articles to which students can refer, the need of a brief account adapted to youth, and suitable for school work in preparation for McKinley Day exercises, still exists; so I have endeavored to relate the main facts in the life of William McKinley, and have selected a few incidents in his life, hoping that they may prove an inspiration to many a boy to emulate that high and noble example. Excerpt from William McKinley: His Life and Work During last Winter, under a contract which I made, I wrote sketches of all the Presidents of the United States for a publication not yet quite ready to be presented to the public. That book will make its appearance in due time and will be a very attrac tive publication, in my judgment, even aside from the sketches which it gave me so much pleasure to write.
