Excerpt from The Life and Correspondence of Rufus King, Vol. 5: Comprising His Letters, Private and Official, His Public Documents and His Speeches; 1807-1816 Though many of the letters of Mr. King's correspondents are long, it has been thought best to give them as they were written, without leaving out any portions which might be necessary clearly to express the opinions of the writers; the object has been to prevent any suggestion of omissions with a view of modifying these opinions. The Editor, therefore, desires to say that in all cases where the marks indicate that something has been left out, the matter excluded is either repetition of thoughts elsewhere expressed, or entirely irrel evant, and perhaps of personal interest only.
