Excerpt from The Law of Moses In the Article which follows, a powerful argu ment is presented in support of the traditional belief of Jews and Christians, and, indeed, of all generations from the time of our Lord till about a hundred years ago, that the Five Books of our Bible, called the Pentateuch, are the Law of Moses. For these last hundred years, a school of criticism has prevailed in' the Universities of Germany and England, which denies this tra dition, and alleges that these five books are, in their present form, a compilation by Jewish scribes, after the Babylonian captivity, from writers so unknown that they can only be designated by letters, J., H., P., H., and so on, who wrote centuries after Moses. Nor is this the most important part of the critical theory. Such writers might tell the truth. But these writers and compilers together are said to have presented in the Pentateuch, 'to the Jewish people and the world, a radically false account of early Jewish history, and to have attributed to Moses legisla tion which came at a much later date. Voltaire once asked whether, if a sacred Book was found to state what was not true, it could be considered sacred. Strange to say, a large body of English. Excerpt from The Laws of Moses and the Code of Hammurabi Semitic scholars, too, and especially students of biblical and post - biblical literature, will welcome the recovery of a monument which for its bearing upon the laws of the Old Testament exceeds in value even the discoveries of Babylonian creation-legends and deluge-myths. The Code comes at a time when the biblical world is being flooded with literature, scholarly and otherwise, dealing with the extent of Babylonian civilisation upon Israel. It is, therefore, a particularly opportune discovery, since a careful examination should enable the unprejudiced reader to determine how far - if at all - Israelite legislation was indebted to Babylonia. If the indebtedness is beyond dispute, then the influence of Babylonia must have been of the most deep-seated character; but if, on the other hand, the dependence of Israel upon the Babylonian Code is not proved, only the strongest arguments will allow us to accept those views in accordance with which Palestine had been saturated with Babylonian culture and civilisation centuries before Hebrew history took its rise. As a preliminary to our account of the Code a few pages have been devoted in Chapter II. to a general consideration of Babylonia and Israel. Excerpt from Moses and the Law: A Study of Pentateuch Problems The first chapter of the Book of Genesis narrates the creation of the universe and of the living and inanimate world in a story of work accomplished in six days. If the most rigorously literal interpretation be attached to the text, disregarding all considerations but the meaning of the individual words as they stand, the account appears to commit itself to three statements: (1) The world was created in six stages, the work of 'each being begun and completed within one day: And there was evening and there was morning, a second a third day.' (2) Each stage was comprehensive and the time allotted to it did not overlap with that of any other stage; (3) The six stages are placed in a definite order of succession in time. Excerpt from Lex Mosaica: Or the Law of Moses and the Higher Criticism HE Higher Criticism has had its say in this country as well as on the Continents of Europe and America. Sporadic efforts have been already made by re sponsible writers to Show that the new position is either untenable or is fraught with greater difficulties than the traditional view. But' it occurred to the Editor that there was still room for a work which should put to a more systematic test the working of the recent hypotheses. We appeal to the same documents as our Opponents. We believe that our Opponents are equally with our selves desirous to arrive at truth. The critics have appealed to the development of events as recorded in the Old Testament in verification of their theories: we endeavour to Show that upon these theories the history is unworkable in any one of the centuries between the period of the great lawgiver and the completion of the Canon. Excerpt from The Law of Hammurabi and Moses: A Sketch I have to thank Professor Grimme for kindly per mitting his brocfiure to appear in its present form. For my translation he has revised his original throughout, added the whole of the passage on the ancient Arabian inscriptions (a subject in which he is known to be specially interested), and a new Foreword. He is in no way responsible for any additions of my own, which are always definitely marked off from his work by, at least, square brackets usually followed by the contracted word trans. For the Table of Contents here given, the division into chapters, the chapter-headings and Index, I am also responsible. The quotations from the Bible are given, usually, from the Revised Version.
