Excerpt from A Pageant of Progress: Women of American History Beginning with the discovery of our country by Columbus, we find in each per iod some woman who distinguished herself as a leader to advance some progress in our development. The idea advanced by each woman often seemed rash, but years afterward we see it adopted as practical. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Pageants and Pageantry The following chapters summarize briefly the experience of some years in producing and writing amateur plays and pageants. The teaching experience of the author has shown her that as a means of instruction, of inculcating literary appreciation, and of producing the historic sense, dramatic work has no equal. Far-away incidents become vital experiences, names and facts take on actuality, and that imaginative power that is ever keenest in children needs no urging when "the play's the thing." Nothing sends children so willingly to the library shelves as the desire to know something of the times they are going to portray, of the costumes they are going to wear, and of the manners they shall depict. Nothing will put them into the mediaeval spirit like acting out The Children's Crusade; nothing will make them feel the colonial temper like a play of Puritan times; nor will they forget Regulus or Vespasian, Charlemagne or Caxton, after they have seen them walk the boards of their school hall. Acting teaches more than the fact, trains more than the voice or the bearing, and besides all its intrinsic values, such work brings esprit de corps into the school where it flourishes, - furnishes incentives to good work, and keeps many an idle J-and unambitious child in school when otherwise he would have wandered his discontented way into truancy or the factory. Excerpt from A World Wide Pageant I had long recognized the latent desire that is in most people for "play acting," and felt the failure of the church in making use of this, seeming natural, instinct for the glory of the Kingdom. But when I began to cast about I found a dearth of suitable material. What I found was too difficult, too complicated in scenery or costuming, required too many rehearsals, or was in itself unappealing. The result was "The World Wide Pageant," in which I believe I have overcome all of these objections. This Pageant was written for use in my own church with no thought of its publication; but I have received so many requests for copies that I have decided to put it in print. In offering it to the public I must make certain grateful acknowledgements. To John Oxenham and Hugh Moss for certain verses adapted from their "Pageant of Darkness and Light." To Robt. W. Service for certain lines and phrases. To Rev. Herman C. Weber of the New Era Movement of New York for his encouragement in the publication. And last, but not least, to my faithful wife, Gertrude D. Campbell, whose knowledge of missions, customs and dress has enabled me to make the production a success. Excerpt from The Ladies' Pageant In the beginning, when Twashtri came to the creation of woman, he found that he had exhausted his materials in the making of man, and that no solid elements were left. In this dilemma, after profound meditation, he did as follows. He took the rotundity of the moon, and the curves of creepers, and the clinging of tendrils, and the trembling of grass, and the slenderness of the reed, and the bloom of flowers, and the lightness of leaves, and the tapering of the elephant's trunk, and the glances of deer, and the clustering rows of bees, and the joyous gaiety of sunbeams, and the weeping of clouds, and the fickleness of the winds, and the timidity of the hare, and the vanity of the peacock, and the softness of the parrot's bosom, and the hardness of adamant, and the sweetness of honey, and the cruelty of the tiger, and the warm glow of fire, and the coldness of snow, and the chattering of jays, and the cooing of the kókila, and the hypocrisy of the crane, and the fidelity of the chakrawàka; and compounding all these together, he made woman and gave her to man. Excerpt from Two Patriotic Pageants The two pageants contained in this book are the work of classes in the New'jersey State Normal School at Trenton. In their preparation the school festival idea predominated. This means two things - first, that the work was made sub jective as far as possible, so that the emphasis was on the preparation rather than on the final per formance; and second, that the various departments of the school cooperated in making contributions to the work. For instance, when the Columbus cele bration was planned the classes in history studied that period, looked up sources, and then submitted their findings to the English classes, Where the plot was constructed and the words were written. Meanwhile the music department was training the school for the appropriate songs, the classes in domestic arts were planning and making the Cos tumes, art Classes were drawing posters, in the manual training rooms stage properties were being made, and in the gymnasium-dances Were devised and rehearsed, The reading and speaking depart ment coordinated the work and directed the produc.
