Excerpt from The Journal of Electro-Therapeutics, 1895, Vol. 13 In studying the literature Of the day on the treatment Of cicatrix of the urethra, of the rectum, Of the esophagus, and of many other parts Of the body, we find there have been brilliant cures wrought by the application Of the negative galvanic current directly to the cicatrix. The dense, unyielding tissue has softened and become elastic, deformi ties are corrected, and delicate nerve filaments are set free, thus relieving reflex nervous symptoms for which, in most cases, the patient applied to the physician for relief. Why may we not take the hint thus given us and use the same agent for cicatrix Of the cervix? I am well assured that few, if any, Of these conservative physicians are among my hearers to-day. Excerpt from The Journal of Electro-Therapeutics, 1897, Vol. 15 I' wish to present to you the outline of a case which came to my clinic last winter, together with my treatment of it, and my reasons for selecting that course of treatment. It is the case of a woman of about fifty, who, twenty four years ago, while pregnant, burst a vessel in the brain, and had a well-marked crossed paralysis. When she came to me, the facial paralysis had disappeared, but the left limb was paretic and the left arm was practically useless, as her hand was not entirely under her control, and would open and close involuntarily. The contour of the arm was changed, probably on account of the unusual character of the exercise her muscles had in making these athetosic movements. Sensibility was intact. Excerpt from The Journal of Electro-Therapeutics, 1901, Vol. 19 Pathologically, then, lupus vulgaris is a local tuberculosis of the skin. The essential lesion is a new growth resulting from the irritation caused by the presence of the tubercle bacillus. The process begins in the deeper layer of the cutis. The nodules displace the bundles of fibrous tissue; and as they increase in size they grow upward through the skin, destroying its component elements by pressure, so breaking through the papillary layer, and emerging on the surface, where they are covered only by the epithelium, more or less translucent according to its thickness. Microscopic sections of this tissue present all the peculiari ties oi tubercular tissue found anywhere. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Archives of Electrology and Neurology, 1874, Vol. 1: A Journal of Therapeutics and Nervous Diseases The practitioner finds not only explained the fundamental laws of physics, a knowledge of which is so indispensable to the rational employment of Electricity, and the electro-physi ological and historical part thoroughly described, but the work contains, if I may use such a term, the cream of all known writers on electro-therapeutics which have appeared until now, besides a valuable collection of well-described cases, which were treated by the authors with electricity. Excerpt from The Therapeutic Gazette, 1889, Vol. 13: A Monthly Journal of Physiological and Clinical Therapeutics But the particular writer of antiquity who has the most to say respecting the antiseptic properties of sulphur is certainly Pliny. He tells us that in the island of Milo there exists an excavation whence issue sulphurous vapors. When epidemics prevail in the island, the in habitants enlarge this excavation, in order that the sulphurous vapors may be more abundant, and penetrate the houses and purify the country. But let us come down to a more modern period, and examine on what experimental bases is established the antiseptic value of sulphurous fumigations. These experiments, relatively recent. Have all pertained to the de struction of the virulent properties of certain products, or to the sterilization of certain micro-organisms. In the work of Sternberg, which I have ai ready mentioned, he has given considerable prominence to sulphurous acid, and has shown that the combustion of five grammes per cubic metre of sulphur sterilizes vaccine in the liquid state, and that it is necessary to increase the quantity to sixteen grammes to effect the sterilization of dried vaccine.
