Excerpt from The Imperial Organization of Trade The present volume is a contribution towards the knowledge of one branch only of Imperial Organization, that of trade. It is an instalment of a larger work on Imperial Organization, and is published at the present time with a view to advancing the closer union of the Empire in trade matters at the next meeting of the Imperial Conference, which takes place in 1911. That meeting will occur in the midst of the festivities of the Coronation, and it behoves any one who wishes to obtain even the momentary attention of British statesmen at home or beyond the seas, to press such questions forward before those festivities begin, and above all while the spirit of compromise is still in the air. The writer is no partisan on the bitterly controversial questions here discussed. In fact, though a keen Conservative, he has for this reason felt obliged to refuse in recent years desirable invitations to stand for Parliament. Excerpt from The Empire Review and Journal of British Trade, 1916, Vol. 29 WE are all unhappily only too familiar With the subject of my observations. This will exempt me from troubling my readers with too many details. I will, therefore, plunge in medias res, and I am quite sure they will understand Why I adopt this method of treatment. The Germans could have gone from their own country directly into France, but not so easily, they thought, as through Belgium. Consequently they made Belgium the door-mat for the German jack-boots, desolated that fair land, laying waste its countryside, burning its towns and villages, Slaying men, women, and children, and destroying the finest treasures of art and architecture. There is nothing more Wicked and Shameless in all the Records of War. Nor is there anything more heroic than the magnificent, though unequal, resistance of the Belgian King and the Belgian people. Excerpt from The Principles of Trade Co-Operation The most urgent need of the times is a revision of the code of. Business ethics with community welfare as the point of attainment. Economic necessity, in fact, decrees such revision. The age demands efficiency which cannot be attained under the unbridled competition now existing in the trade community. Excerpt from The Trade of the World The Trade of the World, including as it does prac tically all the activities of the human race, is of a scope so tremendous in its broader meaning that to choose this title for a book seems almost pre sumptuous. In this volume no pretense is made of discussing the subject fully or finally; nor is it possi ble to particularise concerning more than a few of the most important or typical countries whose trad ings go to make up the enormous total. If, however, the reader may obtain a better appreciation of the common sense, wisdom, knowledge and courage re quired, not only of the individual but of nations, in seeking successfully a fair share of international commerce, the purpose of the work will have been achieved. That we must know a land and its peo ple before we can strengthen mutual bonds of trade and friendship, is fundamental, yet it is an axiom, the truth of which is often forgotten, ignored, or per haps even never realized. Successful international trading rests on bigger things than mere exchanges of commodities; these in their fullest development follow mutual knowledge and understanding. Excerpt from Report on the Trade of China and Japan In contrast to this condition it may he stated that the British Government con sidered ten months-a reasonable period in the case of the writer's investigation in Canada and Newfoundland (1907) and that, in a country of six and a half million inhabitants, intersected with railways, having a common language. Possessing a statistical record of the' activities of her people, and a uniform currency. In view of the difference between both the time allotted to the duty nd the character of the problem presented, I can only hope to re ect the mature judgment of the European community and of leading Chinese upon the prospects of trade with China, and trust that these facts will be borne in mind in considering this report.
