Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSO) provide quality learning opportunities for students to explore future career pathways. The urban midwestern public high school case study in this research had students participating in four Career and Technical Student Organizations; FBLA, FCCLA, DECA, and SkillsUSA. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact CTSOs had on student choices in career pathway planning. It was first determined that the school did not have a method to collect data on the effectiveness of student organizations and how they correlated to student's career choices. This mixed-methods case study focused on the impacts CTSOs had on career choices for students. As well as the perceptions participants had upon graduating from high school. A literature review provided background content for CTSOs and career pathways. A quantitative demographic survey was sent to twenty-three past graduates in which seventeen responded and provided demographic data. A qualitative semi-structured interview was also conducted with five of the survey respondents which each provided a narrative of their experiences in CTSOs and how they impacted their career choices. Overall it was determined that CTSOs have a positive impact on student's career pathway choices through a number of hands-on experiences and opportunities.

In addition to hands-on learning in classrooms and work-related activities such as co-op, many CTE programs offer a career-focused student organization, known as a Career and Technical Student Organization, or CTSO. CTSOs have been touted as developing such characteristics as leadership and employability skills in students; however, there is little research definitively showing the benefits of participation in CTSOs. In this study, we hypothesized that CTSOs provide a variety of experiences that either directly or indirectly affect three important outcomes of secondary education: achievement, transition to postsecondary education and training, and employability. A pre-test/post-test comparison study of high school students in CTE classes that included a CTSO, CTE classes without a CTSO, and general non-CTE classes such as English and social studies was conducted over the course of one academic year. Findings showed that, on a variety of measures, CTSO students began the school year with similar or higher scores than the other groups of students and did not change (gain or lose) as much as did the other groups over the course of the year. With the exception of college aspirations--where students in the general classrooms reported the highest levels--the scores of the CTSO students remained higher than those of students in the other two groups on all measures. A positive association between amount of CTSO participation and academic motivation, academic engagement, grades, career self-efficacy, college aspirations, and employability skills was also found. Finally, of the four specific organizational elements of CTSOs (leadership, community service, competitions, and professional development), competitions were found to have the most positive effects. The potential benefit of CTSO participation to a larger and more heterogeneous group of students is discussed. In large urban school districts such as Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and many others, as many as half of the students starting their first year of high school do not finish. The economic costs are over $150 billion annually without considering the incalculable personal and social costs. Now, more than ever, it is critical to find different pathways to connect to high school students and engage them as they prepare for postsecondary life. The specific objective of this research was to determine student perceptions of how core academic programs that are linked with core academic curriculum and real world experiences such as Linked Learning contributed to engagement in high school and readiness for postsecondary life. In addition, this study examined teachers' and administrators' perceptions of Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways and, more specifically, their views on the integration of CTE and core academics, as well as influences on student engagement and preparation for postsecondary education and career readiness. This study used a mixed methods approach, including a student survey, student and teacher focus groups, and interviews with administrators. This research paper found that students enroll in a CTE pathway more to prepare for a potential career than for any social reasons. Additionally, CTE pathways helped student engagement and comprehension of other core academic subjects, such as English and mathematics. The research also found that educators did not promote, request, nor demand the increased integration of CTE and core academics. More detailed longitudinal research on the impact of various CTE pathway approaches on high school graduate outcomes is needed to better understand whether change should be pursued.

Low degree completion in technical and engineering degrees is a growing concern for policymakers and educators in the United States. This study was an examination of the behaviors of adolescents specific to career decisions related to technology and engineering. The central research question for this study was: do rural, Midwestern high school technical and engineering curricula serve to engage students sufficiently to encourage them to persist through high school while sustaining their interests in technology and engineering careers? Engaging students in technology and engineering fields is the challenge for educators throughout the country and the Midwest. Rural schools have the additional challenge of meeting those issues because of resource limitations. Students in three Midwestern schools were surveyed to determine the level of interest in technology and engineering. The generalized likelihood ratio test was used to overcome concerns for small sample sizes. Accounting for dependent variables, multiple independent variables are examined using descriptive statistics to determine which have greater influence on career decisions, specifically those related to technology and engineering. A typical science curriculum is defined for rural Midwestern high schools. This study concludes that such curriculum achieves the goal of maintaining or increasing student interest and engagement in STEM careers. Furthermore, those schools that incorporate contextual and experiential learning activities into the curriculum demonstrate increased results in influencing student career choices toward technology and engineering careers. Implications for parents, educators, and industry professionals are discussed.

"Due to the high unemployment rate and difficulty for students to transition from education to work, this thesis looks at how Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs provide a supplement to the traditional education systems throughout the world, and can be a solution to students graduating with employable skills so they can find meaningful work.
