The practices of the East meet those of the West in this intriguing book on the relationship between Zen meditation and the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola. Ruben Habito, a Zen Master as well as an expert in Ignatian spirituality, brings these two hallowed paths to enlightenment together in this intriguing book designed not only for believers in either tradition, but for seekers and beginners as well. Both comparing and contrasting Zen traditions of meditation and enlightenment with St. Ignatius' famous Exercises for attaining Divine Love, Habito offers suggestions on how the two traditions share the same goals and how each might benefit from the other or from their shared practice. As the reader follows Habito through the stages of purgation of false desires, illumination of one's true path, and the generous desire to give back what one has been given through the Divine, Habito shares illuminating and instructive stories, literary and spiritual reflections, and thought-provoking ways on how to update Zen and Ignatian spirituality to meet the needs and desires of a contemporary seeker.

The Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius (written between 1522 and 1548) are a very representative example of Catholic Christianity. Although they were elaborated by one individual, they echo the practice of the preceding thousand years. The reality of the Exercises is rooted in the principle of personalisation, and in the discernment of how the act of following Jesus makes itself concrete in history. Javier Melloni follows up his popular exploration of the Spiritual Exercises in their Christian setting, The Exercises of St Ignatius in the Western Tradition, with a new book examining three spiritual pathways which underlie three different religious traditions the Spiritual Exercise of St Ignatius, linked with Christianity; Yoga, which proceeds from Hinduism; and Zen, originating from the womb of Buddhism. With an understanding of these three ways we place ourselves at the heart of their respective traditions, as suggested by the Latin saying: Lex orandi, lex credendi, that is to say, prayer and by extension, every spiritual practice is the reflection of a mode of belief, just as every belief is configured to the extent to which it is prayed. He presents these three ways with a double purpose: to show the specific elements of each one, as well as their common or convergent points. Only if we do not confuse them can we recognise both the difficulty and the richness to be found in placing them in relation with one another. To integrate is not the same as to mix up. Above all, what certainly unites the three ways is that they are not speculative, but initiatory or mystagogical. Their objective is the transformation of the person who undertakes them, to admit that person into the experience of the Absolute. This book explores the Spiritual Exercises through the Yoga Sutras (the Yoga Karma or the Yoga of Action, the Bhakti Yoga or the Yoga of Devotion, the Jnana Yoga or the Yoga of Knowledge), through Zen Buddhism, and by looking at the role of images and of discursive thought, emptying and decentring, effort and grace, and the presence and absence of a divine 'Thou'. Javier Melloni was born in Barcelona. He has studied in Kerala and in Paris, and is now working in his home country in the retreat house known as the Cave of St Ignatius in Manresa.

What if the Ten Commandments were not just a set of ancient rules, but a guide to experiencing the good life today? “Adam Hamilton is a teacher of the highest order, able to bridge the gap between very old divine teaching and very current human reality.”—Barbara Brown Taylor, author of Always a Guest: Speaking of Faith Far from Home Nearly everyone has heard of the Ten Commandments, the list of “thou-shalt-nots” found in the Bible. Jesus saw these commandments not as onerous burdens, but as guideposts to help us experience a good and beautiful life. These ten ancient “words” were given to us by a loving God who longed to set safe boundaries, create order out of chaos, help communities live peacefully, and protect us—often from ourselves. In this book of Scripture and inspiration, bestselling author Adam Hamilton brings modern eyes to the most important set of ethics in history. He considers the commandments in their historical context, considering the meaning of each commandment in Hebrew, unpacking how Jesus reinterpreted them, and showing how every thou-shalt-not was intended to point to a life-giving “thou shalt.” He also explores how the latest research in science and psychology illuminates these commandments, rightly understood, as a way of ordering one's life beautifully in the present day. In a culture marked by workaholism, materialism, and social media-driven envy, God has given us a time-tested path that leads to gratitude, confidence, and peace. A landmark work from one of our most trusted biblical thinkers, Words of Life is an inspiring, thought-provoking read for anyone seeking to live a meaningful and joyful life.

Get Fit Spiritually We look at the world—and at God—in drastically different ways than our ancestors did, and yet the wisdom of a sixteenth-century Catholic saint perfectly suits our doubtful, antiauthoritarian, pluralistic age. St. Ignatius of Loyola believed that we could know God better by paying attention to his work in our lives, our experiences, our imagination, and our feelings. His Spiritual Exercises, an enduring masterpiece of spiritual insight, teaches us to grow spiritually by learning to respond in concrete, practical ways to this divine presence. The Ignatian Workout presents St. Ignatius’s wisdom in today’s language—as a daily program of “workouts” to achieve spiritual fitness, tailored to people with busy schedules. It is a program that shows us how to recognize and respond to a God who is already at work in us, inviting us into a deeper relationship and into richer lives of love and service. “A thoughtful, clever, and very practical introduction to Ignatian spirituality.” —J. A. Appleyard, S.J., vice president for University Mission and Ministry Boston College “The Ignatian Workout is a valuable contribution to contemporary writing on Ignatian spirituality. Muldoon does a fine job of illustrating just how relevant this spirituality is for today’s young adults.” —J. Michael Sparough, S.J., director of Charis Ministries Ignatian Spirituality for Young Adults

A classic Christian text from the founder of the Jesuit Order. The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola is the core work of religious formation for members of the Society of Jesus, the single largest religious order within the Roman Catholic Church. For four and a half centuries in many thousands of editions in all languages, The Exercises have embodied fundamental spiritual principles essential to authentic Christian living. The mystical insight informing Ignatius's own relationship with God—which he distilled in The Exercises—is that the divine love of God is providentially present in all the details of our existence. Here Ignatius shows how the faithful can be joined to God in all things, according to the Jesuit motto, Ad majorem Dei gloriam, "For the greater glory of God."
