One of the most popular writers of his day-and one most unjustly forgotten-J.T. Headley thrilled audiences with his tales of real-life history. This 1873 work is an enthralling collection of accounts of urban upheaval in one of the U.S.'s most historically vital cities: New York. Here, Headley offers us highly readable and informative reports on: - the negro riots of 1712-1741 - the Stamp Act riot of 1765 - the doctors' riot of 1788 - the abolition riots 1834-5 - the flour riot of 1837 - the draft riots of 1863 - and more. Anyone interested in the history of New York City will find this a fascinating read. American writer and journalist JOEL TYLER HEADLEY (1813-1897) was an editor at the *New York Tribune* and wrote extensively on historical matters. Among his many books are *Washington and His Generals* (1847), *Life of Cromwell* (1848), and the bestselling *Life of Washington* (1857).

'Class lines between settlers and labourers had been drawn...What follows is a microhistory of collective revolt.' In 1843, the New Zealand Company settlement of Nelson was rocked by the revolt of its emigrant labourers. Over 70 gang-men and their wives collectively resisted their poor working conditions through petitions, strikes and, ultimately, violence. Yet this pivotal struggle went on to be obscured by stories of pioneering men and women 'made good'. The History of a Riot uncovers those at the heart of the revolt for the first time. Who were they? Where were they from? And how did their experience of protest before arriving in Nelson influence their struggle? By putting violence and class conflict at the centre, this fascinating microhistory upends the familiar image of colonial New Zealand.

The Great Riots of New York, 1712 to 1873 by Joel Tyler Headley CHAPTER I. Character of a City illustrated by Riots.-New Material for History ofDraft Riots.-History of the Rebellion incomplete without History ofthem.-The Fate of the Nation resting on the Issues of the Struggle in NewYork City.-The best Plan to adopt for Protection against Mobs. The history of the riots that have taken place in a great city from its foundation, is a curious and unique one, and illustrates the peculiar changes in tone and temper that have come over it in the course of its development and growth. They exhibit also one phase of its moral character-furnish a sort of moral history of that vast, ignorant, turbulent class which is one of the distinguishing features of a great city, and at the same time the chief cause of its solicitude and anxiety, and often of dread. The immediate cause, however, of my taking up the subject, was a request from some of the chief actors in putting down the Draft Riots of 1863, to write a history of them. It was argued that it had never been written, except in a detached and fragmentary way in the daily press, which, from the hurried manner in which it was done, was necessarily incomplete, and more or less erroneous. It was also said, and truly, that those who, by their courage and energy, saved the city, and who now would aid me not only officially, but by their personal recollections and private memoranda, would soon pass away, and thus valuable material be lost.
