Excerpt from The History of Henry Fielding, Vol. 1 To the Shame of all who write and speak our mother tongue, no one has yet brought together the works of a great master who, like Shakespeare, was careless of his fame. Nor have the biographers given more than casual attention to anything beyond what a very mediocre jour nalist once selected for them; all the rest, except such stray pieces as they happened to read in the most cursory manner, they have in turn consigned to the land of matters forgot because they knew nothing of them. I have at tempted to discover what these secondary works are, to fix their dates, and to give some account of them in connection with the half-known plays and the famous novels. These rejected publications have been a primary source of this biography; they have let light in upon the long-prevailing darkness. Their number, their scope, their character, make absurd the dissipated Fielding of tradition; they are a monument to Fielding's energy and earnestness, which once established time cannot remove. Excerpt from Select Works of Henry Fielding, Vol. 1 of 2: With Memoir of the Life of the Author; Containing "the History of Tom Jones" Under such precarious circumstances, the first Eng lish novel was given to the public, which had not yet seen any works of fiction founded upon the plan of painting from nature. Even Richardson's novels are but a step from the old romance, approaching, indeed more nearly to the ordinary course of events, but still dealing in improbable incidents, and in characters swelled out beyond the ordinary limits of humanity. The History of a Foundlmg is truth and human na ture itself, and there lies the inestimable advantage which it possesses over all previous fictions of this particular kind. It was received with unanimous w clamat'ion by the public, and proved so productive in Miller, the publisher, that he handsomely added lml. To owl, for which he had purchased the work from the author. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Works of Henry Fielding, Esq., Vol. 6 of 10: With the Life of the Author Notwithstanding your constant refusal, when I have asked leave to prefix your name to this dedication, I must still insist on my right to desire your protection of this work. To you, Sir, it is owing that this history was ever begun. It was by your desire that I first thought of such a composition. So many years have since past, that you may have, perhaps, forgotten this circumstance: but your desires are to me in the nature of commands; and the impression of them is never to be erased from my memory. Again, Sir, without your assistance this history had never been completed. Be not startled at the assertion. I do not intend to draw on you the suspicion of being a romance-writer. Excerpt from The History of Henry Fielding, Vol. 2 These books were studied and annotated in some cases as a preparation for treatises of his own. Fielding was in train ing for the Bench. Circumstances, however, checked his immediate ambi tions. The Ministry that had been patched up after the fall of Walpole was held in contempt by the politicians of both the Whig factions from which it had been formed. Consequently it had to face a torrent of abuse from the friends of Walpole, who wished to paralyze it, and from the members of the old Opposition, who were angry be cause their real leaders were left out. In an anonymous Letter to a Friend in the Country, which appeared in April, 1743, the author declared that at no time in his memory had there ever been afloat so many scurrilous libels, lampoons, and ballads violating all truth and decency. Much of this scandal was laid to Fielding, notwithstanding his solemn promise in the preface to the Miscellanies. Excerpt from The Works of Henry Fielding, Esq., Vol. 1 of 11: With an Essay on His Life and Genius J But it was against hypocrisy his satiric ridicule was studiously directed: for hypocrisy was in the eyes of Fielding, as his own words declare, The most cunning as well as malicious of all the vices which have ever corrupted the nature of man.' His good intentions may also be seen in his Essay on Conversation, where he says that his design was to ridicule out of society one of the most pernicious evils which attends it, namely, pampering the gross appetites of selfishness and ill-nature with the shame and disquietude of others, whereas, ' he continues, L' I have endeavoured in it to show that true good-breeding consists in contributing with our utmost power to the satisfaction and happiness of all around us.'
