Although the events of the years antecedent to the war cannot be recognized as having been its immediate cause, I have deemed it essential, from their importance, to relate them at some length. As in the preceding volumes, I have given references to the authorities on which my statements are based. To admit of the verification of any disputed point. I have endeavoured in all cases to avoid controversy, and have confined myself to a narra tive of the incidents, as they are presented by contemporary documents.
