Excerpt from The History of Auricular Confession, Vol. 1 of 2: Religiously, Morally, and Politically Considered Among Ancient and Modern Nations In laying this remarkable work before the English reader, the translator conceives it may not be superfluous to indicate the object which the noble author had in view in thus exposing the immoral effects of the system of Catholicism, so conspicuous in the invention and practice of Auricular Confession. Excerpt from A History of Auricular Confession, Vol. 1: And Indulgences in the Latin Church Perhaps in treating the subject of the present work I may be accused of threshing old straw. For nearly four centuries it has served as material for endless controversy, and its every aspect may be thought to have been exhausted. Yet I have sought to view it from a different standpoint and to write a history, not a polemical treatise. With this object I have abstained from consulting Pro testant writers and have confined myself exclusively to the original sources and to Catholic authorities, confident that what might thus be lost in completeness would be compensated by accuracy and impartiality. In this I have not confined myself to standard theo logical treatises, but have largely referred to popular works of devotion in which is to be found the practical application of the theories enunciated by the masters of theology. I have purposely been sparing of comment, preferring to present facts and to leave the reader to draw his own conclusions. Excerpt from The History of Auricular Confession, Vol. 2 of 2: Religiously, Morally, and Politically Considered Among Ancient and Modern Nations It is easy for monks and depraved priests to seduce, by the means of confession, especially among the lower orders, females who live in the world: the things becomes still more so relatively to the nuns or pensionnaires confined in convents. Depravity introduced into those houses spreads like an epidemic, with symptoms and consequences more or less fatal, according to the nature and inclinations of individuals. Excerpt from A History of Auricular Confession and Indulgences in the Latin Church, Vol. 2: Confession and Absolution (Continued.) The first prerequisite to the enjoyment of the fruits of the sacra ment is a knowledge of the truths of religion, and we have just seen how the Lutherans insisted on this, and provided for it in the Verhoz'. It is the same in the Catholic Church, and confessors dealing with those not known to them are instructed always to begin with an examination into the soundness of the penitent's faith. Ignorance of the leading points of doctrine is a mortal sin, but it is not suffered to prove a serious obstacle in the confessional, for the penitent is not required to know the articles of the creed by heart, and it suffices for him to express his assent when asked such questions as Do you believe that there are three persons in the Trinity? 1 Only obsti nate disbelief can thus serve as a barrier.
