Excerpt from A Guide to the Victoria History of the Counties of England The object of this introduction is mainly to direct the attention of contributors to certain general rules which should be scrupulously observed by them in any work they may undertake for the Victoria County History.' The essential facts to be borne in mind by every writer are (a) that the present work concerns itself with local and not with national history and (e) that as the various sections are contributed by different persons it is absolutely necessary that each writer should be most careful to confine his work strictly within the limits of his own subject. Every contributor should read the separate instructions for each section of the history, and before submitting his article to the general editors should carefully revise what he has written with a view of seeing that it has been kept within the limits of local history and has not encroached on subjects other than his own. The style adopted by all the contributors should be as concise and simple as possible and strict accuracy should be maintained. Imaginative descriptions of circumstances and scenes should be avoided. So far as possible no definite statements should be made for which some original authority cannot be given in a footnote (unless such state ments are made from personal observation). While every reasonable means should be used to clear up points of uncertainty and difficulty, if those means fail it should be stated that investigation has failed to yield the required information at the same time a suggested solution of a difficulty may be given. Difficulties should be submitted to the general editors for advice. English forms of personal names, both surnames and christian names, should as far as possible be used. With regard to these, translations of the more important Latin and French forms of those used in England will be found in Appendices Nos. IV. And V. An indispensable guide to how the VCH was born and developed, with vital information on the counties it covers, editors, and contributors. This commemorative publication celebrates 75 years of the association between the Victoria County History and the Institute of Historical Research. Lavishly illustrated with images from VCH volumes, the book contains information on the counties covered by the project and a list of general editors, directors, deputy editors and architectural editors past and present. It includes a piece by the current director of the VCH, Professor John Beckett, looking back at the origins of the organisation, the events that led to it being taken on by the IHR, the developments that have taken it into the 21st century, and at what the future might hold. As a complement to the General Introduction to the VCH (1970) and its supplement (1990) the book provides an update on the contents of the volumes, as well as a list of those who contributed to them. It is rounded off with a light-hearted delve into the fascinating archivesof the VCH itself, making The Little Big Red Book a must-have for anyone interested in local history.

The history of the town of Bolsover and neighbouring parishes, from prehistory to the present day. The history and topography of the small market town of Bolsover in north-east Derbyshire and four parishes immediately to its north (Barlborough, Clowne, Elmton - including Creswell - and Whitwell) are covered in this volume. Alllie mainly on a magnesian limestone ridge, rather than the exposed coalfield, and therefore only became mining communities late in the nineteenth century. Since the end of deep mining in Derbyshire all have faced a difficult period of economic and social adjustment. As well as the general development of the five parishes, the book includes detailed accounts of the medieval castle at Bolsover, the mansion built on the site of the castle by the Cavendish family of Welbeck in the seventeenth century, and Barlborough Hall, a late sixteenth-century prodigy house built by a successful Elizabethan lawyer. Philip Riden teaches in the Department of History at the University of Nottingham; he has been the editor of the Victoria County History of Derbyshire since 1996, when he re-established the VCH in the county.

Her Majesty the Queen has graciously permitted the Victoria County History to rededicate its series of county volumes, in celebration of her Diamond Jubilee. The History keeps the name it was given in honour of Queen Victoria when it was founded in 1899 as one of great national projects of that time. It has remained one of the foundations of knowledge about English localities, publishing a remarkable series of encyclopaedic volumes, county-by-county, parish-by-parish. This book is about the Victoria County History of today: how it developed in its early commercial years through the dedication of its General Editors and a team of experts, before becoming a great public project based at the University of London, and now a dynamic organisation reaching everyone interested in their locality through websites, paperbacks and events, as well as the 'big red books'. Each VCH county retains its own personality and loyal following, as you will see from the pages created by the counties active in research now.
