Medical anthropologist Kaufman (U. of Calif., San Francisco) interviewed seven doctors, eminent in their fields, and trained during the 1920s and 1930s. She interviewed them between 1987 and 1989 (they were all between the 80-83 years old), seeking their life stories and their feelings and thinking about the shape of American medical education and care today. Tales of a Wounded Healer begins by revealing the 27-year odyssey of renowned psychotherapist Mariah Fenton Gladis through her diagnosis and subsequent life with Lou Gehrig's Disease, and how that diagnosis catapulted her to envision and develop a new method of psychotherapy that dramatically facilitates healing and change. Mariah turns her former approach inside out by moving from encouraging people to cope with their lot in life, to empowering them to understand and provide for the compelling force and potential of their own personal needs. The book shows that when met with respect, love and compassion, human needs can arm people with the capacity to transform their lives and contribute to the healing of others. In this book, Mariah Fenton Gladis presents strong practical and theoretical instruction for the concept of creating exact moments of healing; moments grounded in awareness that precisely respond to and provide for the emergent need of an individual, family or community. These are the moments that produce substantial shifts in a person's worldview, character, and capacity to create meaningful contact with themselves, others and their environment. Tales of a Wounded Healer presents true stories of people who have changed their lives through this profound work and describes the seminal moments that shaped their transformation. These stories focus on specific moments of healing in detail and illustrate such themes as the importance of receptivity in healthy human functioning, recovery from post traumatic stress syndrome, the need for supportive community, mending fractured families, creating self-esteem and empowerment, development of a compassionate relationship with self and others, and recovery from sexual abuse and trauma. Throughout the book, the Mariah Fenton Gladis addresses the reader in an attempt to inspire and educate and make the chapters applicable to the readers' lives. About the Author Mariah Fenton Gladis, MSS, QCSW, is the Founder and Clinical Director of the Pennsylvania Gestalt Center for Psychotherapy and Training in Malvern, Pennsylvania. • Marketing focus on combination of gift production and high content values, delivering a curated read to genre enthusiasts. • Major interest pushed through Instagram, with Youtube reviewers and influences. In the West we tend to think of witches in terms of the witch trials, when fear, ignorance and religious fervour brought the poor to heel, and fostered suspicion of those who dared to be different, or knowledgeable, or independent of mind. Witches and wizards are often associated with pre-Christian societies, Celtic in particular, (and therefore popular in tales of fantasy), but the nature of their wisdom can be found in so many fascinating cultures across the world. Ancient societies, particularly where natural religions with many gods abound, often highlight the power of an elder, or a seer, a healer or a wise friend. Tales of wizards and witches reach across traditions as folk try to explain natural phenomena and engage with the world around them. Those who understood the properties of healing in plants, or could make a prediction of weather events to rescue crops, became worshipped as elders, as keepers of knowledge. In tribal African societies, Polynesian cultures and East Asian traditions there are tales of those with great knowledge who are often described as witches or wizards. The Baba Yaga of Eastern Europe, Bokwewa, the humpback magician of the Chippewa, Merlin and Morgana la Faye of Arthurian Legend and the fox witches of Japan are but a few of the many examples. Some work for good, others with ill-intent, but all become the focus of folkloric legend, collected here in this new book of myths and tales.

A new edition of a National Book Award finalist follows a black faith healer whose shrewd observations about human nature are told with the rich lyricism of the oral storytelling tradition. From the acclaimed author of Corregidora, The Healing follows Harlan Jane Eagleton as she travels to small towns, converting skeptics, restoring minds, and healing bodies. But before she found her calling, Harlan had been a minor rock star’s manager and, before that, a beautician. Harlan retraces her story to the beginning, when she once had a fling with the rock star’s ex-husband and found herself infatuated with an Afro-German horse dealer. Along the way she’s somehow lost her own husband, a medical anthropologist now traveling with a medicine woman across eastern Africa. Harlan draws us deeper into her world and the mystery at the heart of her tale: the story of her first healing. The Healing is a lyrical and at times humorous exploration of the struggle to let go of pain, anger, and even love. Slipping seamlessly back through Harlan’s memories in a language rich with the textured cadences of unfiltered dialogue, Gayl Jones weaves her story to its dramatic—and unexpected—beginning.
