Excerpt from The Great Southwest, or Plain Guide for Emigrants and Capitalists: Embracing a Description on the States of Missouri and Kansas The great interest now being awakened with regard to Missouri and Kansas must be taken as a sufficient apology for the publication of this book. No other States, not excepting even Nevada, and California, have attracted so much attention, or become so much the theme of remark and inquiry as these. Geographically, they occupy a cen tral position in the habitable part of the continent, forming virtually the heart of the country. The climate, soil, and resources of these States are worthy of this honorable position. No part of the Union is more fertile or better watered, and but few are more salubrious. Thy go to the Gulf States or to the Pacific coast in quest of treasures that are hidden at our own doors - that are buried beneath our own feet? Why neglect the practical advantages Within our reach for the possible good afar off? Men need not go to Texas or Oregon for homes when thousands of acres of the richest and most productive land on the con tinent are lying idle in Missouri and Kansas. The eye of the 'speculator is unhappily adjusted only for viewing remote objects. Its range is telescopic, and hence the images of all near objects are blurred and indistinct. It is With the purpose of correcting such defects of vision that this book has been prepared. The author would place before his readers, in a clear, succinct manner, a correct and faithful description of home lands. They may lack the novelty and roma'nce pertaining to lands remote, but they possess practical advantages Which foreign regions do not possess. In the twenty-first century, the word vigilante usually conjures up images of cinematic heroes like Batman, Zorro, the Lone Ranger, or Clint Eastwood in just about any film he’s ever been in. But in the nineteenth century, vigilantes roamed the country long before they ever made their way onto the silver screen. In Faces Like Devils, Matthew J. Hernando closely examines one of the most famous of these vigilante groups—the Bald Knobbers. Hernando sifts through the folklore and myth surrounding the Bald Knobbers to produce an authentic history of the rise and fall of Missouri’s most famous vigilantes. He details the differences between the modernizing Bald Knobbers of Taney County and the anti-progressive Bald Knobbers of Christian County, while also stressing the importance of Civil War-era violence with respect to the foundation of these vigilante groups. Despite being one of America’s largest and most famous vigilante groups during the nineteenth century, the Bald Knobbers have not previously been examined in depth. Hernando’s exhaustive research, which includes a plethora of state and federal court records, newspaper articles, and firsthand accounts, remedies that lack. This account of the Bald Knobbers is vital to anyone not wanting to miss out on a major part of Missouri’s history.

Scholars and enthusiasts of western American history have praised Elliott West as a distinguished historian and an accomplished writer, and this book proves them right on both counts. Capitalizing on West’s wide array of interests, this collection of his essays touches on topics ranging from viruses and the telegraph to children, bison, and Larry McMurtry. Drawing from the past three centuries, West weaves the western story into that of the nation and the world beyond, from Kansas and Montana to Haiti, Africa, and the court of Louis XV. Divided into three sections, the volume begins with conquest. West is not the first historian to write about Lewis and Clark, but he is the first to contrast their expedition with Mungo Park’s contemporaneous journey in Africa. “The Lewis and Clark expedition,” West begins, “is one of the most overrated events in American history—and one of the most revealing.” The humor of this insightful essay is a chief characteristic of the whole book, which comprises ten chapters previously published in major journals and magazines—but revised for this edition—and four brand-new ones. West is well known for his writings about frontier family life, especially the experiences of children at work and play. Fans of his earlier books on these subjects will not be disappointed. In a final section, he looks at the West of myth and imagination, in part to show that our fantasies about the West are worth studying precisely because they have been so at odds with the real West. In essays on buffalo, Jesse James and the McMurtry novel Lonesome Dove, West directs his formidable powers to subjects that continue to shape our understanding—and often our misunderstanding—of the American West, past and present.
