The papers in this volume were prepared for a February 1996 symposium held in conjunction with the exhibit "Inventing the Southwest: The Fred Harvey Company and Native American Art," organized at the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona. The essays describe the Harvey/Santa Fe partnership, detailing the effects of the collaboration on tourism in the American Southwest, and showing how the lives of Native American artists and their communities were transformed by the massive scale on which the Fred Harvey Company bought, sold, and popularized American Indian art. Illustrated with small b & w historical photos.

As we know them today, the American Southwest, and the Grand Canyon that lies at its heart, are the product of vast natural forces over millions of years. But they were also created by one man's vision and a railroad. The entrepreneurial genius was Fred Harvey. If the Colt .45 revolver "won the West," Fred Harvey civilized it, along with the Santa Fe Railway. In the late nineteenth century, the Santa Fe opened up a strange, spectacular new territory to travelers. And Harvey followed, establishing restaurants, hotels, and shops to make them comfortable. In Over the Edge, Kathleen L. Howard and Diana F. Pardue reveal in vivid detail how Harvey and the Santa Fe together created a vision of the Southwest that still works its magic today.

The Fred Harvey name will forever be associated with the high-quality restaurants, hotels, and resorts situated along the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway in the American Southwest. The Fred Harvey Company surprised travelers, who were accustomed to "dingy beaneries" staffed with "rough waiters," by presenting attractive, courteous servers known as the Harvey Girls. Today many Harvey Houses serve as museums, offices, and civic centers throughout the Southwest. Only a few Harvey Houses remain as first-class hotels, and they are located at the Grand Canyon, in Winslow, Arizona, and in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Fred Harvey and the Santa Fe Railway teamed up to develop tourism in the American Southwest from the late 1880s to the 1960s. These two companies formed an interdependent alliance that welcomed travellers thirsty for a civilised "western experience". The Harvey Company provided first class food served by friendly "Harvey Girls" on the trains and offered grand accommodations near the stations, and both Fred Harvey and the Santa Fe energetically promoted the Southwest through marketing strategies, including hundreds of postcard images of scenic landscapes and historic cultures in New Mexico and Arizona. Over 285 colour images and a clear text offer a brief history of the Santa Fe Railway and the Fred Harvey Company as they promoted Santa Fe, Albuquerque, the Grand Canyon, the region's Native American cultures, and International expositions outside the Southwest. Approximate ages of each postcard and associated values make the book a useful resource for postcard collectors as well as history buffs. Come along on the ride and enjoy the scenery.

By the late 1800s, the major mode of transportation for travelers to the Southwest was by rail. In 1878, the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway Company (AT&SF) became the first railroad to enter New Mexico, and by the late 1890s it controlled more than half of the track-miles in the Territory. The company wielded tremendous power in New Mexico, and soon made tourism an important facet of its financial enterprise. All Aboard for Santa Fe focuses on the AT&SF's marketing efforts to highlight Santa Fe as an ideal tourism destination. The company marketed the healthful benefits of the area's dry desert air, a strong selling point for eastern city-dwelling tuberculosis sufferers. AT&SF also joined forces with the Fred Harvey Company, owner of numerous hotels and restaurants along the rail line, to promote Santa Fe. Together, they developed materials emphasizing Santa Fe's Indian and Hispanic cultures, promoting artists from the area's art colonies, and created the Indian Detours sightseeing tours. All Aboard for Santa Fe is a comprehensive study of AT&SF's early involvement in the establishment of western tourism and the mystique of Santa Fe.
