What Drives a Man to Withdraw? What drove a quiet man to choose a life of solitude-away from people he knew, and grew up with? By early adulthood Carl Morse had experienced betrayals, leaving only a select few he could trust. Was it the heartless acts of others? Was it lost love? Was it the atrocities of WWI he experienced? What was it that altered Carl Morse's attitude toward society and public interaction? He was known as a seer, a horse whisperer, one who could read people, who could intuit what was going to happen... And yet...he retreated into the forest he loved, to the creatures he cherished, the place he felt safe, to reappear only twice a year. Based on the real life of Carl L. Morse of Granville, Vermont, Morse's life became folklore. He lived, he loved, he retreated, he vanished. He is not forgotten.

Tracing its distant origins to the villa of the Roman emperor Hadrian in the second century AD, the eccentric phenomenon of the ornamental hermit enjoyed its heyday in the England of the eighteenth century It was at this time that it became highly fashionable for owners of country estates to commission architectural follies for their landscape gardens. These follies often included hermitages, many of which still survive, often in a ruined state. Landowners peopled their hermitages either with imaginary hermits or with real hermits - in some cases the landowner even became his own hermit. Those who took employment as garden hermits were typically required to refrain from cutting their hair or washing, and some were dressed as druids. Unlike the hermits of the Middle Ages, these were wholly secular hermits, products of the eighteenth century fondness for 'pleasing melancholy'. Although the fashion for them had fizzled out by the end of the eighteenth century, they had left their indelible mark on both the literature as well as the gardens of the period. And, as Gordon Campbell shows, they live on in the art, literature, and drama of our own day - as well as in the figure of the modern-day garden gnome. This engaging and generously illustrated book takes the reader on a journey that is at once illuminating and whimsical, both through the history of the ornamental hermit and also around the sites of many of the surviving hermitages themselves, which remain scattered throughout England, Scotland, and Ireland. And for the real enthusiast, there is even a comprehensive checklist, enabling avid hermitage-hunters to locate their prey.

Not illustrated. 1820 edition. Excerpt: ... from that order of Irishmen the regards for permanent improvement, which a well-grounded confidence in the security of their titles would establish. When they had reached the cottages to which their journey was directed, old Dermo'd was immediately recognized, and with his unknown companion, warmly welcomed by the cottagers. Their looks were fixed upon the Hermit; and when informed of his settlement in Glenconella, and of the object of his present visit, they resolved to avail themselves of the offer, and expressed their cordial gratitude. Several hours were passed in conversation, and the Hermit already obtained the reputation amongst them of a kind, familiar, good-natured man. The two visitors were hospitably entertained, and after mutual gratulations departed, in the afternoon, for their return. They had not gone far when the Hermit observed to Dermo'd that he saw a man at a considerable distance crossing the hill, and a small boy with him, who appeared to carry something over his shoulders. "Oh, yes, (rejoined Dermo'd) this is Father Anthony, and his little clerk with him, carrying the vestments. He is coming to stop with us tonight, to say Mass in the morning: God knows I am glad he is coming, that you may have some person worth while to speak to." The Hermit expressed equal satisfaction at the approach of the Friar, but assured his considerate old friend that no conversation could be more agreeable to him than that which he enjoyed since he came to the village. Dermo'd proposed to await the arrival of the Friar; and the Hermit seconding this wish, they sat down upon a rock until he approached them. The venerable father seemed much fatigued; but the difficulties of his journey had not diminished the sanctified cast of his...

Excerpt from The Hermit and the Wild Woman: And Other Stories The Hermit lived in a cave in the hollow of a hill. Below him was a glen, with a stream in a coppice of oaks and alders, and across the valley, half a day's journey distant, another hill, steep and bristling, raised against the sky a little walled town with Ghibelline swallow-tails. When the Hermit was a lad, and lived in the town, the crenellations of the walls had been square-topped, and a Guelf lord had flown his standard from the keep. Then one day a steel-coloured line of men-at-arms rode across the valley, wound up the hill and battered in the gates. Stones and Greek fire rained from the ramparts, shields clashed in the streets, blade sprang at blade in passages and stairways, pikes and lances dripped above huddled flesh, and all the still familiar place was a stew of dying bodies. The boy fled from it in horror. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
