The Book of Golf Quotations is simply the best collection of quoted wit and wisdom on the game of golf, the sport that has defined generations of politicians, footballers, celebrities and ordinary folk with plenty of spare time and a bewildering array of equipment and brightly-coloured clothing. And, of course, professional golfers. The range of quotes is as huge as a Tiger Woods tee shot, with quips from such diverse leading lights as Monty and Mad Mac, Wodehouse and Woosie, Churchill and Bobby Cruickshank, Bob Hope and Ben Hogan, George Bernard Shaw and Tom Shaw - and fully updated to include all the great quotes and comments of a new generation of golfing heroes from Seve to Sam Torrance, other famous people who play golf, and famous people who think golf courses should be abandoned and allowed to seed wild grasses and trees instead. With all the experience and gravitas of Jack Nicklaus, and as funny as a pair of Darren Clarke's trousers, The Book of Golf Quotations is the last word for every fan of frolics on the fairway, on the green or at the nineteenth hole. 'This game is great, and very strange.' Seve Ballesteros 'The best year of my life was when I was eleven. I got straight As, had two recesses a day, and the cutest girlfriend, and won 32 tournaments that year. Everything's been downhill since.' Tiger Woods 'At least he can't cheat on his score - because all you have to do is look back down the fairway and count the wounded.' Bob Hope 'There were three things in the world that he held in the smallest esteem - slugs, poets, and caddies with hiccups.' P G Wodehouse 'You can't birdie all 18 holes if you don't birdie the first three.' Nick Faldo

For us rabbits the game of golf is a constant battle between fantasy and reality. The great hopes and ambitions that accompany us on the first tee quickly evaporate by a combination of mother nature, gravity and the cruelest of luck. One of the charms of the Great Game is that we are constantly chasing what is, in theory, attainable but in reality highly elusive. It is a perpetual series of occasions for hope. David Feherty summed it up when he said; "Golf can best be defined as an endless series of tragedies obscured by the occasional miracle." It is astonishing how long the occasional miracle can remain in the memory to the total eclipse of all else. Golf is a game whose hook is baited with hope. This book is a compendium of quotes from players who have been similarly troubled by the journey from great hopes to cruel reality. I hope you enjoy their reflections.

Did you ever wonder why your golf scores never improve much even after many years of experience? And, did you know putting contributes about 40% to your total score, making putting the single most important part of your golf game? Do you want to improve? Then, this book is a MUST read! Golfers need to understand and come to grips with the harsh realities putting places on them as well as the many factors that impact putting success, many more mental than physical; therefore, this book leaves the fundamentals of putting stroke to others. To assist golfers, or golfer "wannabes", the author utilizes his 30 years' experience in sport performance enhancement and 60 years of playing golf to provide a framework that will lead to increased putting performance IF you will follow some of book's suggestions. The book is written in a conversational style, with the intent of having the reader interact with material presented - responding to questions, agreeing or disagreeing with a certain perspective, and perhaps searching your conscience for the "why's" and "why not's". Innumerable drills and strategies are offered, both to improve the physical and mental sides of the golf game. Insights into how and what to practice, based on proven approaches, are emphasized to counter the haphazard way most golfers typically practice. Putting really is a head game. I certainly enjoyed reading your book. You have brought every act of putting to the surface. FINALLY a putting book that doesn't talk about the stroke the whole time. I truly believe the best formula for making putts is to roll the ball on the correct line at the correct speed. Of the two elements speed is the most important. The other tangibles that go with it are to read greens correctly and to have confidence in your stroke and read. You seem to have touched on each one of the topics in depth. The object of putting is to putt the ball in the hole NOT to move the putter in a certain direction or a certain way. The added humor was a nice touch. Good luck with the publishing of the book and sign me up for a finished copy. Nice job. Michael B. Krick, Head Golf Professional Carolina Trace Country Club Sanford, North Carolina

Part crusader, part comedian, Jim Murray was a once-in-a-generation literary talent who just happened to ply his trade on newsprint, right near the box scores and race results. During his lifetime, Murray rose through the ranks of journalism, from hard-bitten 1940s crime reporter, to national Hollywood correspondent, to the top sports columnist in the United States. In Last King of the Sports Page: The Life and Career of Jim Murray, Ted Geltner chronicles Jim Murray’s experiences with twentieth-century American sports, culture, and journalism. At the peak of his influence, Murray was published in more than 200 newspapers. From 1961 to 1998, Murray penned more than 10,000 columns from his home base at the Los Angeles Times. His offbeat humor and unique insight made his column a must-read for millions of sports fans. He was named Sportswriter of the Year an astounding fourteen times, and his legacy was cemented when he became one of only four writers to receive the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for coverage of sports. Geltner now gives readers a first look at Murray’s personal archives and dozens of fresh interviews with sports and journalism personalities, including Arnold Palmer, Mario Andretti, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Yogi Berra, Frank Deford, Rick Reilly, Dan Jenkins, Roy Firestone, and many more. Throughout his life, Murray chronicled seminal events and figures in American culture and history, and this biography details his encounters with major figures such as William Randolph Hearst, Henry Luce, Marilyn Monroe, Marlon Brando, John Wayne, Mickey Mantle, Muhammad Ali, and Tiger Woods. Charming and affecting moments in Murray’s career illustrate the sportswriter’s knack for being in on the big story. Richard Nixon, running for vice president on the Eisenhower ticket in 1952, revealed to Murray the contents of the “Checkers” speech so it could make the Time magazine press deadline. Media mogul Henry Luce handpicked Murray to lead a team that would develop Sports Illustrated for Time/Life in 1953, and when terrorists stormed the Olympic village at the 1972 Munich games, Murray was one of the first journalists to report from the scene. The words of sports journalist Roy Firestone emphasize the influence and importance of Jim Murray on journalism today: “I’ll say without question, I think Jim Murray was every bit as important of a sports writer—forget sport writer—every bit as important a writer to newspapers, as Mark Twain was to literature.” Readers will be entertained and awed by the stories, interviews, and papers of Jim Murray in Last King of the Sports Page.
