Excerpt from The Friendly Enemy That there is Greatness not beyond our reach, Greatness whose lonely brows are lit with God. It passed, with its deliberate unrest, It passed and left desire within your soul Nor taught you any art of things expressed Whereby desire may move toward a goal. Against the doors of speech your hands are red Torn with their beating on the inviolate locks. Your eries are mumed by our myriad tread; We hear no questing in the hand that knocks. Excerpt from Their Friendly Enemy Hallie Rector's seventeen-year-old head was small and dark, and it had a way of tilting itself on one side like a listening robin's, when its owner was carried out of herself with interest in something else. It was tilted now, as her bright dark eyes held her chum's, across the wide, paper-littered desk between them. Excerpt from The Faith of a Quaker There arise also the insistent questions which beset all mystics, and which in Quakerism demanded a corporate, instead of an individual, answer. Was the light infallible? Was the claim to it an assumption of spiritual exaltation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. During the Cold War, Britain had an astonishing number of contacts and connections with one of the Soviet Bloc's most hard-line regimes: the German Democratic Republic. The left wing of the British Labour Party and the Trade Unions often had closer ties with communist East Germany than the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB). There were strong connections between the East German and British churches, women's movements, and peace movements; influential conservative politicians and the Communist leadership in the GDR had working relationships; and lucrative contracts existed between business leaders in Britain and their counterparts in East Germany. Based on their extensive knowledge of the documentary sources, the authors provide the first comprehensive study of Anglo-East German relations in this surprisingly under-researched field. They examine the complex motivations underlying different political groups' engagement with the GDR, and offer new and interesting insights into British political culture during the Cold War.

Excerpt from My Enemy's Daughter, Vol. 3 of 3: A Novel For all had happened as I told Christina. I had acted on the idea of making Lilla the younger the angelic, celestial mediatrix in the whole of the painful business. I felt sure that her influence over her father would have power enough to induce him, for the sake of the other Lilla, to buy off or pension off in some way his wretched brother send him to America or Australia, or anywhere out of the way. Many times I passed her door to no purpose. One day at last I saw her as her groom was holding her horse's head and she was about to mount. Perhaps if she had not seen me then, and cordially recognised me, I might not have ventured to speak to her; but she did see me, and gave me a frank and friendly recogni tion; and then I went up and presented myself to her, and told her without hesitation that I came Of my own counsel, unasked by anybody, unknown to anybody, to plead for her good offices on behalf of her cousin, the other Lilla. What ever of secrecy might afterwards have grown up, this at least was done openly, at her father's door.
