Perhaps if she had not seen me then, and cordially recognised me, I might not have ventured to speak to her; but she did see me, and gave me a frank and friendly recogni tion; and then I went up and presented myself to her, and told her without hesitation that I came Of my own counsel, unasked by anybody, unknown to anybody, to plead for her good offices on behalf of her cousin, the other Lilla. What ever of secrecy might afterwards have grown up, this at least was done openly, at her father's door.
