Excerpt from The Franklin Elementary Arithmetic The method of the book is indicated by its title. It distinguishes arithmetical operations from the science of arithmetic. While it gives a systematic practice in the former, it leaves the latter to be learned after the mere operations have become familiar by practice. N O attempt is made to establish general principles, but the pupil is led to Operate by imitating processes illustrated by simple examples, generally in the concrete. General statements and formal rules are thus rendered unnecessary. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Franklin Elementary Algebra The method of teaching algebra set forth in this book assumes as a leading principle that algebraic language, like other language. Is best acquired, not through definitions and formal rules, but rather through actual use of the language itself as an instrument of thought. The singular power of algebraic language in analysis and reasoning is under stood only when one has learned to use it in those processes. The earlier a beginner can be taught to use even a little of this language in reasoning, the better; for so may his interest in it be earlier awakened through the conscious exercise of a newr power. Accordingly, the first part of this book is devoted to the solution of easy problems, by the use of simple equations, with one unknown quantity. The few symbols needed are briefly explained in'the first section. The second section is'a carefully arranged collection of problems, interspersed with explanations, as new features in the process of solu tion call for them. Small numbers are used in a por tion of the problems, that the reasoning may with ease be carried on mentally and expressed orally. This oral use of algebraic language is found to be. A very efficient means of instruction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Franklin Primary Arithmetic The franklin primary arithmetic is intended to be an aid in teaching numbers by the objective or intuitive method. As it is from objects that the child gets his first notions of numbers, so it is by the use of objects that the teacher will best succeed in imparting clear and lasting knowledge of num bers. Throughout this book, therefore, numbers are treated as numbers of things and the things are supposed to be either actually, or in imagination, present before the pupil. To aid in this appeal to the senses a very liberal use has been made of pictures and other illustrations these will, to some extent, take the place of tangible objects while taken in connection with the text they serve a no less important purpose in awakening and training the imagination, or in aiding the memory to retain observed facts. Excerpt from The Franklin Intellectual Arithmetic: For the Use of SchoolsHence it is im rtant that the objects presented to the mind of a chil should have an elevating influence, and excite him to aspire to something more excellent than he has already attained. To make children more fond of study, we must throw around them a literary atmosphere. If in their studies the are constant] reminded of mi sins and area es, can y and pears, fi berts and cookies, it becomes a ifiicult task to inspire them with a love for Academus' shades, Helium's fountain, or Siloa's brook. For this reason, among others, the to books of children, ' such as Tom Thumb, Cock Robin, B as Beard, &c. Have been exchanged for the plain, practical, and unvarnished tales of real life.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Franklin Written Arithmetic: With Examples for Oral Practice The Franklin Written Arithmetic contains a full course of arithmetical instruction and drill for pupils in the common schools. The definitions and principles are thoroughly illustrated and explained, so that the learner may work intelligently; while the range of applications is broad and varied enough to afford him good preparation for ordinary business affairs. Topics of a merely theoretical interest, antiquated or curious matter, and puzzling problems, are omitted altogether; while parts of the subject not very necessary to the greater number of pupils are given in the Appendix. To avoid a multiplicity of rules, decimals and integers have been treated together whenever that could easily be done. For the same purpose, the various problems in Percentage have all been referred to a few fundamental principles, stated and illustrated at the outset. The Metric System has been treated in a way to indicate the most prae tical course to pursue in teaching it. The topics that follow Simple Interest in this book, as in most arith metics, can wisely be deferred till the last years of the common-school course.
