Excerpt from The First Book of French Composition: Materials for Translating English Into French This work is designed for beginners, and may be put into the hands of any person knowing the elementary roles concerning substantives, articles, and adjectives, and the conjugation of regular verbs. My object has not been to write a course of grammar, but to make the pupils familiar with the most important rules of daily occurrence in translating English into French. In teaching I have been struck by the difficulty most pupils experience in the simplest translations of this kind. Many who have studied grammar some time, and who easily understand French at sight, are unable to translate English into French without making a great number of mistakes. From this, it has seemed to me that it would be useful to familiarise pupils as early as possible with the most common difficulties of translation. To accomplish this, I have collected some pieces of English prose, and have arranged them as examples to the rules. At the end of these pieces, I have put others bearing on the whole of the rules, and serving as a recapitulation. The book is divided into two parts: Part I. - Pieces for Translation, with rules. Part II. Pieces for Translation, without rules. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Using a process-writing approach, this third-year composition text will help students master their writing skills in order to become confident authors, who have found their voice in written French. The text is set up in a workbook format and is written entirely in French, except for the first chapter. Each chapter begins and ends with a creative writing exercise. In between these book-ends, students will broaden their repertoire of related speech acts, vocabulary, grammatical structures and stylistic elements as illustrated by their usage a literary piece, journalistic selection, or informal writing, drawn from the rich repertoire of Francophone (written) production (expression).
