Excerpt from The Ethical Aspects of Evolution A volume entitled "The Romance of Evolution," and containing Mr. Kimball's essays upon the contact of the philosophy of evolution with the religious traditions and sentiments, has recently been published with a brief memorial preface which need not be repeated here. Mr. Kimball believed that evolution was the friend and ally of religion and not its enemy, that while it had overthrown an outgrown theology, it had opened the way for more rational and ethical interpretations of religion. He held that it had removed the foundations of religion from the quicksands of external authority and of supernaturalism to the solid basis of reason and experience. Excerpt from Evolution and Ethics By insensible steps, the plant builds itself up into a large and various fabric of root, stem, leaves, flowers and fruit, every one moulded within and without in accordance with an extremely complex, but, at the same time, minutely defined pattern. In each of these complicated structures, as in their smallest constituents, there is an immanent energy which, in harmony with that resident in all the others, incessantly works towards the maintenance of the whole and efficient performance of the part which it has to play in the economy of nature. But no sooner has the edifice, reared with such exact elabora tion, attained completeness, than it begins to crumble. By degrees, the plant withers and disappears from view, leaving behind more or fewer apparently inert and simple bodies, just like the bean from which it sprang; and, like it, endowed with the potentiality of giving rise to a similar cycle of manifestations. Excerpt from Evolution and the Need of Atonement As the title indicates, the main object of this book is not to offer a new theory of the Atonement. Rather it is intended to Show that when the origin and history of man are studied from the scientific, and especially the biological side, the spiritual life, its partial failure, and the need for Atonement, far from receding into vagueness and unreality, are thrown into strong relief. Excerpt from The Relation of Evolutionary Theory, to Ethical Problems: With Special Reference to Method The investigation of which this thesis is the outcome, had its origin in a desire to reach a conclusion with regard to the value of the method followed by the great evolutionists in biology when they approached psychological or ethical questions. It is evident that what is at stake in such an investigation is not, in the first instance, the great ethical concepts, for every one would recognize a place for 'duty', 'obligation', 'virtue', etc. The ethical schools differ in their interpretation of these terms by reason of the conceptions of motive, moral criterion, etc. It was very soon recognized that the aspect of the subject which was really Vital was the method of approaching these questions rather than, in the first instance, the solutions reached. For this reason it was felt that in order to appreciate the position of the modern evolutionist, it was necessary to under stand the theories, both psychological and biological, with which he approached the ethical problem. It is the attempt to understand the evolutionist in a sympathetic way which led to the somewhat extensive exposition of Part I. For clearness we have confined the discussion of this part almost altogether to the broad question of the use of the evolutionary method in psychology. Very naturally, then, Part II. Had to be taken up with a discussion of the ethical content, for which, under some form, all moralists have to provide a theory. In Part III. The conclusions reached in Parts I. And II. Have been briefly summarized. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
