Excerpt from Entomologist's Record and Journal of Variation, Vol. 16: January to December, 1904 Another volume has been completed, and we tender our heartiest thanks to the subscribers, contributors, and everyone who has in any way helped towards the continued success of the magazine. An overflowing supply of most interesting material has always been on hand, and we apologise most heartily to those whose contributions have not yet been published, and hasten to assure them that arrears will be cleared oft as quickly as possible. We were afraid at one time that the arid theme of synonymy and usage of names were about to overwhelm us, and, whilst not wishing to stifle such discussion altogether, on particular and essential difficult points and facts, we object to occupying valuable space with opinions, criticisms, and unimportant details, and prefer greatly to publish notes about the insects themselves, rather than about the names they do, or ought to, bear. We have been again particularly indebted to Professor Beare and Mr. Donisthorpe for their share of the work in providing and editing a continuous supply of notes on the Coleoptera, and also to Mr. Burr, who has kept alive the interest in the Orthoptera. Few of our recruits appear to take up the less worked orders, Lepidoptera and Coleoptera, absorbing most of the work done. For the General Index this year we have to thank our friend, the Rev. C. R. N. Burrows; and for the Special Index, Professor Beare, Mr. Burr, Mr. Routledge, and Mr. Turner. These gentleman, by sharing the work, have already completed the index. The idea was to publish it with this number, but it appears that this can scarcely be done without delaying publication for a few days, which is hardly desirable. It will be sent out if possible with the January number, so as to lessen as much as possible the delay in binding. Our supply of plates this year has exceeded that of any previous volume. For help in producing these we are greatly indebted to Dr. T. A. Chapman, Mr. J. A. Clark, and Mr. J. C. Dollman. The three-colour photograph that was to have been published with no. 12 of the last volume, to illustrate Dr. Chapman's new Psychid, could not be completed until the publication of no. 3 of the current volume, with which it was published. We propose to make no marked alteration in our conduct of the magazine during the coming year. We shall be glad to receive, at any time, from contributors, blocks to illustrate insects described, or localities worked. Our series of "Practical Hints" will be continued during the spring and summer months. We particularly thank our subscribers for their kind response to our appeal as to the payment of subscriptions last year. Never before have the subscriptions been paid so promptly and with so little waste of effort. We trust that this satisfactory condition of aft airs will be maintained with the coming volume. Excerpt from The Entomologist's Record and Journal of Variation, Vol. 6: January to August, 1895 Nothwithstanding the increased frequency of publication, we have found it impossible to prevent the accumulation of material at a rate in excess of our power of using it. This is not an unmixed evil, for it has relieved us of the difficulty, that existed not many years ago, of obtain ing a sufficiency of interesting matter wherewith to fill our entomological magazines. At the same time, it points to the necessity for a continu ance of the policy of completing a volume in eight months. Accordingly, we have to announce that the twelve numbers of the ensuing volume will be published on the following dates -sept. 15th, Oct. 15th, Nov. 1st and 15th, Dec. Lst and 15th, Jan. 15th, Feb. Lst and 15th, March 1st and 15th, April 15th. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Entomologist's Record and Journal of Variation, Vol. 8: May to December, 1896 Every educated man and woman has heard Of the leaf-butter flies, and, sooner or later, every entomologist, when showing his collection to a friend, is suddenly pulled up and asked to explain why certain insects resemble leaves, and how such peculiarities have arisen. There are three ways of answering the enquirer's question, so far as we have Observed To say you do not know. (2) To equivocate, because you do not like to say you do not know. (8) To explain the matter clearly to your own satisfaction and that of the enquirer. In order to do the latter, even in general terms, it is necessary to have some definite idea as to details one's self. The reason why certain insects resemble leaves is evident: it is to enable them to escape from enemies that would otherwise prey upon them. To explain how the peculiarities, which give them such strong resemblances to leaves, have arisen, is a much more difficult matter. It is evident that, if we are to attempt to explain the matter, we must hazard a theory. Our theory, it must be remembered, only attempts to explain the facts. The use of a theory is to Offer a probable explanation. If it explains all the conditions we observe, it may be that the theory is really the true explanation of how the facts have been brought about. SO soon as the theory ceases to be in accordance with Observed facts, so soon the theory must be discarded. Excerpt from The Entomologist's Record and Journal of Variation, Vol. 21: January to December, 1909 The morning of August, 5th, 1908, broke doubtfully at Davos; large heavy clouds hang over the valley, whilst others collected round the highest peaks and presaged rain. However, the sun shone brightly between the cloudy intervals, and a start was made for the Sertig-Thal. Across the valley to Claradel, where more "baths" and "open-air beds" are to be found, and one finds oneself in the Sertig-Thal. This is a much narrower valley than the Dischma-Thal, but almost as highly cultivated, although, as it ascends more steeply, the cultivated patches are more quickly left behind. It was, however, a most unusual sight to me to see them busily feeding on the flowers of wild thyme. On the little wild-thyme patches by the edges of the meadows or on the top of the stone-walls, they collected, resting on the flowers with extended and quivering wings, their probosces dug deep into the nectaries of the florets, ever changing their position as they fluttered round a thyme head, successively probing each floret in turn, and then passing on to another, their white-tipped black wings continually vibrating up and down and looking very fresh and fine in the sunlight, and their antennae extended in front; but they remained when the sun was hidden; on two or three occasions also examples were noticed on the horse-droppings in the road, from which they seemed to be extracting some moisture. Argyunis aglaia and A. niobe flew joyously up and down the slopes, whilst, on every small piece of waste ground, Adkinia coprodactyla was, as in all these neighbouring valleys, readily disturbed. A few examples of Aricia astrarche and Polyommatus icarus were also noticed, whilst Melampias melampus flew almost everywhere, nor was there any diminution in the abundance of Pieris brassicae, which, in all the valleys of this part of the Grisons this year, amounted to a veritable plague. Hundreds were often in view at one time, half-a-dozen always, even when cloudy or rain was slightly falling. Excerpt from The Entomologist's Record and Journal of Variation, 1955, Vol. 67 Owing to a change in residence the above broods had to be portable and they were therefore each placed on a turf in the bottom of a 3-gallon bucket, with muslin over the top. These buckets were moved to Surrey in September, holes were pierced in the base, and the buckets were then sunk about 3 inches into the ground. The usual steps were taken to prevent direct rain falling into the bucket. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
