Excerpt from The Entomologist's Record and Journal of Variation, 1928, Vol. 40 The wings of this specimen are completely black all over without any markings except faint blue spots on the lower wings: the two large red spots on the base of the wings on typical specimens are, in this. Excerpt from The Entomologist's Record and Journal of Variation, Vol. 15: January to December, 1903 Our Coleoptera section, thanks to the untiring energy of Mr. Donisthorpe and Professor Beare, has been specially well maintained, and Mr. Burr has kept the less popular section of Orthoptera moving. We have now, thanks to Mr. Burr, considerable material relative to Orthoptera in hand. That the contributions to our knowledge of the Lepidoptera shows no falling off is amply evident. We have attempted as far as possible to give a good supply of plates with this volume. In this department we are particularly indebted to the Hon. N. C. Rothschild, Dr. T. A. Chapman, and Mr. W. G. Sheldon, for generous help. A three-colour photograph that was to have been published with No. 12 to illustrate Dr. Chapman's new Psychid, and that cannot be completed in time for publication, will be published in one of the early numbers of the next volume. For our Special Index we are this year indebted to Professor T. Hudson Beare, Messrs. M. Burr and H. J. Turner. Such detailed work is always a great strain, and we are very grateful indeed for such kind help. The Rev. C. R. N. Burrows will do the General Index for Vol. Xvi. Excerpt from The Entomologist's Record and Journal of Variation, 1894, Vol. 5 We are anxious to keep British entomologists in touch with those of similar tastes in various parts of the world. We do not think this is best done by publishing articles on work done, or descriptions of species from distant parts of the world these must be studied by the specialist who will buy the books he needs. But among the large amount of material which passes through our hands (and for the purpose of en larging our knowledge of what is being done in different parts of the world, and thus giving ourselves a broader view of the subject, we exchange with all foreign magazines that will exchange with us), there are often articles or books which contain information with which the British collector should be acquainted. These we discuss as occasion demands from our own British standpoint, and we feel satisfied that in so doing, we interest all our readers. Glowing accounts of how to catch Purple Emperors and Jersey Tigers may interest us occasionally, but we cannot continually get up an excitement on such subjects. One other matter we would mention, and in this we ask for the aid of all right-thinking entomologists. Britishers have been described as peculiar in their tastes and insular in their habits, with regard to matters entomological, and not without good reason. We have no sympathy with the man who prefers to remain ignorant because he is afraid to have foreign insects in his possession for comparison with British, lest he should be thought a cheat. Those men who study entomology as a science are well-known; they are above suspicion. At the same time, our insular prejudices have placed a high (if artificial) money value on rare and local British species. Why should they not have this value if they are thought worth it? That this is the case is proved by the fact that the value is fixed in British sale-rooms. But this artificial money value has led often to wholesale fraud, and we shall continue to protect our science by exposing such fraud wherever we find it existent, not so much from a sympathy with the victims, who sometimes appear to be pleased when victimised and extremely cross when a dirty piece of work is exposed, but on account of the fact that the introduction of foreign specimens as British, falsifies the data on which our scientific work is based, and disseminates error where we want to disseminate truth. Ignorance and error are the two greatest enemies of Science. Science is the well of absolute truth - all her devotees must seek to drink from'it. Excerpt from The Entomologist's Record and Journal of Variation, Vol. 21: January to December, 1909 The morning of August, 5th, 1908, broke doubtfully at Davos; large heavy clouds hang over the valley, whilst others collected round the highest peaks and presaged rain. However, the sun shone brightly between the cloudy intervals, and a start was made for the Sertig-Thal. Across the valley to Claradel, where more "baths" and "open-air beds" are to be found, and one finds oneself in the Sertig-Thal. This is a much narrower valley than the Dischma-Thal, but almost as highly cultivated, although, as it ascends more steeply, the cultivated patches are more quickly left behind. It was, however, a most unusual sight to me to see them busily feeding on the flowers of wild thyme. On the little wild-thyme patches by the edges of the meadows or on the top of the stone-walls, they collected, resting on the flowers with extended and quivering wings, their probosces dug deep into the nectaries of the florets, ever changing their position as they fluttered round a thyme head, successively probing each floret in turn, and then passing on to another, their white-tipped black wings continually vibrating up and down and looking very fresh and fine in the sunlight, and their antennae extended in front; but they remained when the sun was hidden; on two or three occasions also examples were noticed on the horse-droppings in the road, from which they seemed to be extracting some moisture. Argyunis aglaia and A. niobe flew joyously up and down the slopes, whilst, on every small piece of waste ground, Adkinia coprodactyla was, as in all these neighbouring valleys, readily disturbed. A few examples of Aricia astrarche and Polyommatus icarus were also noticed, whilst Melampias melampus flew almost everywhere, nor was there any diminution in the abundance of Pieris brassicae, which, in all the valleys of this part of the Grisons this year, amounted to a veritable plague. Hundreds were often in view at one time, half-a-dozen always, even when cloudy or rain was slightly falling.
