Excerpt from The English Illustrated Magazine, Vol. 28: October, 1902, to March, 1903 It is a very pretty and romantic story, whatever historical criticism may have to say about it. Beckford, in repeating the version of the legend most in favour in his day tells as that these dis interested birds, after seeing the body decently interred [after martyrdom] pursued the murderers with dreadful screams and tore their eyes out. He further alludes to the current belief at that time in the extraordinary penetra tion of these same birds in the detection of criminals, and makes mention of certain tablets in the Cathedral whereon were depicted some of their most famous achievements in this particular line. Excerpt from The English Illustrated Magazine, Vol. 29: April to September, 1903 The commanding Raphael, whose name no doubt was chosen after his choice of profession, occupies the central position, partly by reason of his great height and also because he is a bulwark around which the weaker members cling. Excerpt from The English Illustrated Magazine, Vol. 10: 1892-1893 That she should have earned so soon after leaving Queenstown harbour the title of the Solitary Girl argued no very surprising gift of observation or ingenuity on the part of the young ladies returning to their beloved States, who had criticised her in her loneliness. Excerpt from The English Illustrated Magazine, Vol. 38: October, 1907, to March, 1908 Phewl dear me, I h0pe you will over look this unseemly ebullition of feeling on my part, but the fact is we are more or less gone on Our General, and to one like myself, who was not only chiefly instrumental in bringing him to the terrace, but who knew him years ago in what he is now pleased to term his better days (when, surrounded by every luxury that money could procure, he was still able to draw everyone to him by that inherent charm of manner, begotten solely of a large and guileless heart) - to me, I say, it is impossible to regard his home ward progress up the terrace with his little granddaughter, as you saw him just now, without some undefined wish that it was at the head of a forlorn hope, and I there to stand by his side and fight with him to the bitter end. So much for breeding! But to go on with Our General. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The English Illustrated Magazine, Vol. 21: April to September, 1899 The colours or other attributes which make an animal conspicuous are now known to act as a danger-signal, warning enemies to keep at a distance; hence they have been very appropriately called warning characters. They are primarily distinctive of animals which are either dangerous to meddle with or disagreeable to taste; but they are almost as commonly found in others that are harmless and tasty, and mimic the poisonous or nauseous species for purposes of protection.
