"The majority of the current literature discusses yoga as a treatment for several physical and mental conditions. However, there is very limited research on yoga's effectiveness among the college student population. This study examined the effectiveness of yoga on anxiety, and stress within an undergraduate college population. To address this goal, the researchers examined the overall effects of physical fitness, and compared that to the effects of yoga in a sample of 56 college students engaged in those yoga and fitness classes. Based on previous research, both yoga and physical fitness should affect participants by reducing anxiety and stress levels. It is also predicted that yoga would have a greater effect on those symptoms. The research design is a pretest/posttest design, as the anxiety and stress measures were administered at two separate times within a five-week period. The data analysis results showed that there was no significant effect for yoga or fitness classes across the anxiety and stress pretest/posttest measures. Additionally, there was no significance of yoga or fitness classes on anxiety after controlling for the effects of depression on anxiety. These findings, while inconsistent with the existing literature, are likely a result of limitations in the data collection process and sample, strength of treatment, as well as low statistical power. Abstract: College students, and particularly, students from minority ethnic backgrounds, have been found to be disproportionately affected by stress, anxiety, and depression. This study explores the impact of a 6-week therapeutic yoga pilot program, Yoga for Mood, on the following mental health outcomes among college students: perceived stress, symptoms of anxiety, symptoms of depression, and resilience. A total of 8 students participated in the evaluation of this pilot program during the Spring 2018 semester at a university with a minority-serving-institute classification. Mental health outcomes were measured by self-reported questionnaires composed of previously validated instruments; assessments were completed before and after the completion of the program. Yoga participants improved more than both exercise and control participants, in anger (ES = 1.01, 0.12, and 0.11 respectively, from pretest to posttest; and 0.89, -0.01, and 0.17 from pretest to follow-up), anxiety (ES = 0.58, 0.31, 0.18, and 0.89, 0.28, 0.27), depression (ES = 0.53, 0.07, 0.05, and 0.54, 0.01, 0.04), well-being (ES = 0.49, 0.36, 0.01, and 0.53, 0.28, -0.08), general self-efficacy (ES = 0.98, 0.35, -0.12, and 0.73, 0.43, -0.12), and self-efficacy for daily living (ES = 0.87, 0.35, 0.07, and 0.51, 0.24, 0.09). Changes in self-control were associated with changes in general self-efficacy and trait anxiety. Self-control is proposed as a mechanism underlying the impact of yoga on psychological health.
