Mirroring of energetic ions and electrons between the magnetosphere and the ionosphere could by one possible mechanism for the precipitation of energetic particles necessary for the proper modeling of the auroral plasma. This paper considers the increased trapping or detrapping of particles in the ionosphere-magnetosphere mirror system caused by an electric potential difference along the geomagnetic field. It is found that the effect of this potential difference can be quite important to the proper modeling of the high latitude plasma, but is of lesser importance for the high energy Van Allen belts. The response of the magnetosphere boundary in a steady solar wind to small initial departures from equilibrium is investigated in accordance with the classical model of Chapman and Ferraro. If the wavelength and amplitude are sufficiently small that curvature and second-order effects can be disregarded, all perturbations, except those having wave fronts aligned with the direction of the local magnetic field, are found to damp exponentially with time and to drift along the boundary with the tangential component of the solar wind. Aligned waves, which neither damp nor amplify in this approximation, are examined further by inclusion of curvature and higher order effects. A first-order analysis shows that curvature introduces a destabilizing effect in small regions in the vicinity of the neutral points and a stabilizing effect elsewhere. Possible geophysical consequences, such as the persistent magnetic agitation of the polar regions, are discussed. An exact solution for an aligned cylindrical solitary wave having an initial form of a circular arc is also presented to illustrate a mode of response that appears to permit injection of elongated and widely separated columns of solar wind plasma into the magnetosphere under certain conditions and to provide a mechanism for momentum transfer from the solar wind to the ambient magnetosphere plasma.

Up to now, most studies were carried out assuming azimuthally symmetric currents, neglecting the well established longitudinal asymmetry in the geomagnetic disturbance at low- and mid-latitudes during magnetic storms. The asymmetric perturbations superposed upon a symmetric field depression has been attributed by several authors to a a longitudinally limited, partial ring current with field aligned closure through the auroral ionosphere (Cummings; Fukushima and Kamide; and references therein). It has been the objective of the research covered by this report to study the effects of such magnetospheric current systems on the propagation of cosmic ray particles through the domain of the earth's magnetosphere. The corresponding results were expected to demonstrate the significance of cosmic ray measurements as an additional tool for magnetospheric studies, especially in modeling the disturbed magnetic field in the magnetosphere. In this report, first the approach to the problem is reviewed in Section 2, and examples of the basic tools needed in the procedure are illustrated in Section 3. Then, in Section 4, the results of a simple study correlating local perturbations in the geomagnetic field with cosmic ray cutoff rigidity variations are discussed. Section 5 contains a summary of a detailed quantitative analysis on the effects of a partial ring current and of field-aligned currents on both cutoff rigidities and asymptotic directions in different latitude regions. In conclusions, the significance of the results obtained in the entire study is discussed in Section 6 for both magnetospheric and cosmic ray research.

In the past two decades a succession of direct observations by satellites, and of extensive computer simulations, has led to the realization that the polar ionosphere plays a principal role in large-scale magnetospheric processes - a manifestation of the physics linkage involved in solar-terrestrial interactions. Spatial/temporal variations in high-latitude electromagnetic phenomena, such as dynamic aurorae, electric fields and currents, have proved to be extremely complex. Now the challenge is to comprehend the vast amount of complicated measurements made in this magnetosphere-ionosphere sysstem of the Earth. This book addresses the electrical coupling between the hot, but dilute, magnetospheric plasma and the cold, but dense, plasma in the ionosphere.
