Download A Study of the Effect of Selected Material Properties on the Ablation Performance of Artificial Graphite Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
Eighteen material properties were measured on 45 different, commercially available, artificial graphites. Ablation performance of these same graphites were also measured in a Mach 2 airstream at a stagnation pressure of 5.6 atm. Correlations were developed, where possible, between pairs of the material properties. Multiple regression equations were then formulated relating ablation performance to the various material properties, thus identifying those material properties having the strongest effect on ablation performance. These regression equations reveal that ablation performance in the present test environment depends primarily on maximum grain size, density, ash content, thermal conductivity, and mean pore radius. For optimization of ablation performance, grain size should be small, ash content low, density and thermal conductivity high, and mean pore radius large.

Download Carbon/Carbon Composition Ablation Effects on Ionized Boundary Layers Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
A calculation method for carbon/carbon composition thermochemical ablation effects on ionized laminar and turbulent boundary layers is given. In the boundary layers 20 gas species are considered and all chemical reactions which occurred in them are assumed to be equilibrium. The new solving method for boundary layer equations and simple disposal for transport properties are applied. The calculation examples indicate that ablation has great effects on ionization properties of the boundary layers and that ionizations of the alkaline metals are not always dominant.

Download Effects of Foreign Gas Injection on Laminar Boundary Layer Stability at Low Mach Numbers Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
The stability characteristics of laminar boundary layer profiles including foreign gas injection were evaluated by solving the disturbance equations for the eigenvalues which define the minimum critical Reynolds number for neutral stability. The profiles utilized demonstrate the differences which accrue from using light and heavy molecular weight gases as the injectant. Results obtained by asymptotic procedures for Mach numbers less than 1.3 show that the heavier gas (carbon tetrachloride) resulted in markedly more stable boundary layers than a lighter gas (helium). Download Carbon Dioxide Injection for Hypervelocity Boundary Layer Stability Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
An experimental method for introducing carbon dioxide as a means of stabilizing a hypervelocity boundary layer over a slender bodied vehicle is investigated through the use of numerical simulations. In the current study, two different test bodies are examined. The first is a five-degree-half-angle cone currently under research at the T5 Shock Tunnel with a four cm porous wall insert used to transpire gas into the boundary layer. The second test body is a similar cone with a porous wall over a majority of the cone surface. Computationally, the transpiration is performed using an axi-symmetric flow simulation with wall-normal blowing. The effect of the injection and the transition location are gauged by solving the parabolized stability equations and using the semi-empirical eN method. The results show transition due to the injection for the first test body and a delay in the transition location for the second test body as compared to a cone without injection under the same free-stream conditions. The mechanism for the stabilizing effect of carbon dioxide is also explored through selectively applying non-equilibrium processes to the stability analysis. The results show that vibrational non-equilibrium plays a role in reducing disturbance amplification, however, other factors also contribute.
