Excerpt from The East Anglian, Vol. 5: Or, Notes and Queries on Subjects Connected With the Counties of Suffolk, Cambridge, Essex,& Norfolk An interesting Introduction, also concerning Raleigh and his writings is prefixed. It is believed that this volume of the series will be acceptable to students as giving a representative view of the writings of Raleigh, and to those who are less acquainted with his works, it will be valuable as an introduction to an English writer well worthy of better acquaintance. The volumes of the elizabethan library are printed in the quaint 24mo size which was so characteristic of the 16th century, in old-face type, on antique paper, and the binding is in the style of the Tudor period, and where possible an authentic portrait of the author appears as a frontispiece to the volumes. They are published at each volume, in sage green, Tudor cloth, and are charged each to subscribers. A few copies are issued in roxburgh binding, with gilt top, at 5/ each, to subscribers nett. There are 75 large paper corms, printed on hand-made paper, for sale in England; these are supplied to subscribers at 15/ each. Excerpt from The East Anglian, Vol. 3: Or Notes and Queries on Subjects Connected With the Counties of Suffolk, Cambridge, Essex and Norfolk The hallowed associations of a building set aside for Divine worship are such, that quite apart from the Church's recognized position and far reaching influence, it is but a reasonable conjecture, that the idea of an open and ever accessible refuge for the world of transgressors, would Operate to allay the wrath of the pursuer who sought to avenge wrongs inflicted upon. A relative, friend, or neighbour at the hands of the offender. It is not difficult in this aspect to understand the use formerly made of our Churches and other religious buildings, in offering so ready a shelter to such as stood in need of protection. The sanctity of the home afforded but slight security against the avenger who desired to bring upon the guilty head of an offending brother a speedy retribution, but we find certain cities, Norwich being one of the number, free for fugitives to enter, while in London and elsewhere, stated localities, having nothing about them of a particularly sacred character, afforded a like privilege and temporary respite from danger. Studies of the very earliest form of language which can be called English, and its later influence. East Anglia - the easternmost area of England - was probably home to the first-ever form of language which can be called English. East Anglian English has had a very considerable input into the formation of Standard English, and contributed importantly to the development of American English and (to a lesser extent) Southern Hemisphere Englishes; it has also experienced multilingualism on a remarkable scale. However, it has received little attention from linguistic scholars over the years, and this volume provides an overdue assessment. The articles, by leading scholars in the field, cover all aspects of the English of East Anglia from its beginnings to the present day; topics include place names, non-standard grammar, dialect phonology, dialect contact, language contact, and a host of other issues of descriptive, theoretical, historical and sociolinguistic interest and importance. Professor JACEK FISIAKteaches in the Department of English at the Adam Mickiewicz University, Poland; Professor PETER TRUDGILL is Chair of English Linguistics at the University of Fribourg. Contributors: PETER TRUDGILL, JACEK FISIAK, KARL INGE SANDRED, GILLIS KRISTENSSON, LAURA WRIGHT, CLAIRE JONES, TERTU NEVALAINEN, HELENA RAUMOLIN-BRUNBERG, KEN LODGE, DAVID BRITAIN, PATRICIA POUSSA
