Excerpt from The Drinker Family in America: To and Including the Eighth GenerationHaving for some years past devoted more or less of my spare time to the collection of data concerning the Drinker Family in America, and being frequently called upon by members of the different branches for information regarding their particular lines of descent, it appeared to me advisable that I should collate and preserve by printing, for the benefit of all the descendants, such facts as I had gathered. The journal of Philadelphia Quaker Elizabeth Sandwith Drinker (1735-1807) is perhaps the single most significant personal record of eighteenth-century life in America from a woman's perspective. Drinker wrote in her diary nearly continuously between 1758 and 1807, from two years before her marriage to the night before her last illness. The extraordinary span and sustained quality of the journal make it a rewarding document for a multitude of historical purposes. This volume is an important contribution to our understanding of culture and alcohol in the United States. Its appearance is also a milestone in the history of alcohol studies in American anthropology. Over the last six years, the volume's editors, initially along with Miriam Rodin, have served as the coorganizers of the Alcohol and Drug Study Group of the American Anthropological Association (AAA).
