Excerpt from The Diseases of Horses, Cattle, Sheep, Swine, Dogs, and Poultry, Their Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment: Collected and Arranged From the Best Authorities The object of this work is to afford information relative to the diseases of domesticated animals, to those who may not possess the advantage of being within reach of good professional advice, and also in cases of emergency, even where such advice can be obtained, but where immediate treatment may be absolutely necessary to save the life or alleviate the sufferings of any of those animals which are dependant upon our care and attention. Before proceeding to describe the causes, symptoms, and treatment of the various maladies to which the live stock of the farm and other kinds of domesticated animals are liable, we are anxious that our readers should be fully impressed with the fact that most of those diseases are capable of being prevented by the exercise of ordinary care and forethought. This will be clearly seen when the causes of disease, as detailed in the following pages, are taken into consideration; and we would therefore press the importance of attending closely to many points in management, simple enough in themselves, but the neglect of which not unfrequently leads to very disastrous consequences. When we turn, for instance, to the maladies which affect the horse, and consider the causes by which they were produced, how many do we find the direct result of neglect, of ignorance, and even of downright cruelty!
