Download The Dijet Invariant Mass at the Tevatron Collider Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
The differential cross section of the process p + pbar --> jet + jet + X as a function of the dijet invariant mass has been measured with the CDF detector at a center of mass energy of 1.8 TeV at the Tevatron Collider in Fermilab. The present analysis is based on the sample of events collected in the 1988/89 run, amounting to a total integrated luminosity of 4.2 pb−1. A comparison to leading order QCD and quark compositeness predictions is presented as well as a study of the sensitivity of the mass spectrum to the gluon radiation. 10 refs., 6 figs.

Download Dijet Production From[bar P]p Collisions at 1.8 TeV. Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
The production properties of dijets from[ital p[anti p]] collisions at[radical][ital s]= 1.8 TeV have been studied using the Collider Detector at Fermilab. This report presents an analysis of the dijet angular distributions using 106 pb[sup -1] of data collected during Run I of the Tevatron Collider. The measured angular distributions agree with next-to-leading order QCD predictions in five dijet invariant mass regions with average dijet mass varying from 263 to 698 GeV/c[sup 2]. The predicted angular distributions are relatively insensitive to parton distribution functions, and therefore these data can be used to put limits on energy scale parameters used to describe contact interactions. For a model with only up and down quarks composite, the data exclude at 95% confidence level a contact interaction scale[Lambda][sub[ital ud]][sup+][

Download Evidence for High Mass Exclusive Dijet Production in the D0 Experiment Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
Exclusive diffractive Higgs boson production is an interesting process which could be studied at the Large Hadron Collider. While the cross section for the Higgs boson production at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider is too low for this channel, it is important to check if the class of exclusive diffraction events exists. We present the evidence for the high mass exclusive dijet production in the D0 experiment. Hard diffractive processes are usually described by the exchange of a colorless object called Pomeron. In diffractive hadron hadron collisions, the hadrons will exchange the Pomeron and either one or both hadrons will not dissolve. The events are identified by either a presence of a large forward region of the detector devoid of any activity (rapidity gap) or by a tagging of the intact beam hadron(s). A subset of diffractive events is called exclusive when the whole Pomeron energy is used to produce the diffractive state, i.e there are no Pomeron remnants. Exclusive diffractive production (EDP) of the Higgs boson or any other new final state X pp --> p + X + p has been recently proposed as a search channel at the LHC. The cross section for the Higgs boson production is too low at the Tevatron (0.2fb is predicted for a Higgs boson mass of 120 GeV), but it is important to check if this class of events exists in this kinematic region. The CDF Collaboration has recently confirmed the existence of EDP in several channels. In this report, we present the evidence for the exclusive production of high dijet invariant mass events, i.e. a dijet event accompanied by large rapidity gaps on both sides of the calorimeter.

Download QCD Tests and New Physics Search with Jets at CDF. Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
The dijet invariant mass spectrum at a center of mass energy √s = 1.8 TeV measured at the Tevatron Collider by CDF in the 1988--1989 run is presented. Comparison with leading order and next-to-leading order QCD theoretical calculation is performed. A search for a possible quark compositeness and for axigluons, while not showing evidence for new physics, allows one to put limits on the compositeness mass scale [Kappa]{sub c} and on the axigulon mass M{sub a}. Preliminary results for the inclusive jet and the total transverse energy cross section from the high statistics data collected in the present run are shown.

Download Observation of Z Decays to B Quark Pairs at the Tevatron Collider Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
A search for Z boson decays to pairs of b-quark jets has been performed in the full dataset collected with the CDF detector at the Tevatron p[anti p] collider. After the selection of a pure sample of b[anti b] events by means of the identification of secondary vertices from b-quark decays, we have used two kinematic variables to further discriminate the electroweak b[anti b] production from QCD processes, and sought evidence for the Z decay in the dijet invariant mass distribution. An absolute background prediction allows the extraction of an excess of events inconsistent with the background predictions by 3.23[sigma] but in good agreement with the amount and characteristics of the expected signal. We then fit the mass distribution with an unbinned likelihood technique, and obtain a Z[yields] b[anti b] signal amounting to 91[+-] 30[+-] 19 events.

Hadron colliders probe physics at new energy frontiers and search for new particles and forces. In addition, hadron colliders now provide also an environment for precision physics. The present volume collects the results from recently completed runs at major colliders as well as new ideas about collider physics and techniques. It will serve as the main source of reference in the field for many years to come.

Download High Mass Exclusive Diffractive Dijet Production in $\mathbf{p\bar{p}}$ Collisions at $\mathbf{\sqrt{s}}$ Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
We present evidence for diffractive exclusive dijet production with an invariant dijet mass greater than 100 GeV in data collected with the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. A discriminant based on calorimeter information is used to measure a significant number of events with little energy (typically less than 10 GeV) outside the dijet system, consistent with the diffractive exclusive dijet production topology. The probability for these events to be explained by other dijet production processes is 2 x 10−5, corresponding to a 4.1 standard deviation significance.
