This title offers the first comprehensive study of the sudden appearance and rise to popularity of the moralistic prose pamphlet. Its interest lies not just in the pamphlet's subject matter but also in the literary techniques developed by its authors to appeal to a newly literate and growing audience. Clark shows what knowledge of the pamphleteers' choice and presentation of their topical material can contribute to our understanding of Elizabethan thought and society.

This book argues that the satire of the late Elizabethan period goes far beyond generic rhetorical persuasion, but is instead intentionally engaged in a literary mission of transideological "perceptual translation." This reshaping of cultural orthodoxies is interpreted in this study as both authentic and "activistic" in the sense that satire represents a purpose-driven attempt to build a consensual community devoted to genuine socio-cultural change. The book includes explorations of specific ideologically stabilizing satires produced before the Bishops’ Ban of 1599, as well as the attempt to return nihilistic English satire to a stabilizing theatrical form during the tumultuous end of the reign of Elizabeth I. Dr. Jones infuses carefully chosen, modern-day examples of satire alongside those of the Elizabethan Era, making it a thoughtful, vigorous read.

First published in 1978 English Verse Satire aims to provide a critical study of the major English verse satirists as well as an account of the historical development of verse satire. Critical accounts are offered of important writers including Donne, Vaughan, Butler, Rochester, Dryden, Oldham, Swift, Pope, Young, Dr. Johnson and Churchill. An account of verse satire commences historically with the Roman satirists and Dr Selden has provided a substantial treatment of Horace and Juvenal as the basis for a study of the evolution of verse satire from the Elizabethan period to the end of the Augustan period. A special feature of the book is the emphasis on tradition, continuity, and innovation. This book is an interesting read for scholars of English literature.

Excerpt from Satire in the Early English Drama Though numerous references have been made to the satirical character of many of the plays of our Early English Dram-a be fore 1600, no work exists which shows in detail this informal dramatic satire. It is hoped that this dissertation will be use ful with its instances of early informal satire' taken from the miracles, moralities, and interludes of the period 1450 to 1600 in showing: the place satire holds in the early drama - a place to become exceedingly prominent in the Elizabethan Drama, especially in the plays of Ben Jonson; (2) the relation of this satire to the subject - matter and the purpose of the plays; (3) the methods, tone, type, and the objects of attack of this Satire (4) a reflectio-nof the manners or social traits of the period; (5) a comparison of this informal dramatic satire with the in formal satire occurring in other literary forms of the period, and with the informal dramatic satire of Elizabethan times. Excerpt from Verse Satire in England Before the Renaissance The difficulties under which the work has been done have been considerable. There are no satisfactory terminology or criteria that might serve as a basis for the treatment Of the Satire as a genre. Such terminology and criteria Chapter I of this book attempts to establish. Again, the very subject matter with which the author has had to deal was found chaotic and widely distributed, some Of it hardly accessible. An effort has been made to render this confused mass in some degree more coherent and Significant. The amount Of critical work on the Satire and on satirical literature in general, in the Shape Of books, essays, magazine articles, etc., is enormous. Yet, either through their merely popular character, their restricted point of view, or their desul tory method, the vast majority Of these studies was found un suited to the purpose of the present work. Furthermore, no treatment Of the evolution Of the Satire as a genre in English has yet been attempted. Professor Alden's book, to which I gladly acknowledge my indebtedness, is an able and scholarly treatment Of one period - that of the Elizabethan Satire. The present study in some measure leads up to Professor Alden's work, Since it essays to trace the development Of satirical verse in England from its beginnings down to the close of its first period, in I 540.
