Excerpt from The Danes in Lancashire and Yorkshire The story of the 'childhood of our race' wh'o inhabited the counties of Lancashire and Yorkshire before the Norman Conquest, is an almost blank page to the popular reader of to-day. The last invaders of our shores, whom we designate as the Danes and Norsemen, were not the least important of our ancestors. The History of their daring adventures, crafts and customs, beliefs and character, with the surviving traces in our language and laws, form the subject of this book. From the evidence of relics, and of existing customs and traditions, we trace their thought and actions, their first steps in speech and handicraft, and the development of their religious conceptions. Our education authorities have realized the fact that Local Names contain a fund of history and meaning which appeals to the young as well as to the adults; and the county committees have been well advised to recommend the teaching of History and Geography from local features and events. Some articles written by the late Mr. John Just, m.a., of Bury, on our early races, and elements of our language and dialect, formed the incentive to the writer to continue the story Of our Danish ancestors. To the following writers we are indebted for many facts and quotations: H. Colley March, Esq., M.D W. G. Collingwood, Scandinavian Britain W. S. Excerpt from Lincolnshire and the Danes I DO not pretend that my books can teach truth. All I hope for is that they may be an occasion to inquisitive men of discovering truth. Although it was of a subject infinitely higher than that of which the following pages treat, that Bishop Berkeley wrote such words, yet they exactly express the sentiment with which this book is submitted to the public. Excerpt from A History of the Danes in America The Danes of to-day, in Denmark, though the direct descendants of the redoubtable vikings, possess but few of their stern, war like characteristics. In fact, it is only through their fondness for the stories recounting the deeds of the ancient gods and heroes that the modern Danes Show their mental kinship to the Viking. Excerpt from The Danes, Vol. 1 of 3: Sketched by Themselves; A Series of Popular Stories by the Best Danish Authors I was of course destined to be bound hand and foot with the counting-house chains; but before putting them on I obtained leave to take a month's holiday in the country, and visit my uncles and my aunts in various parts of Zealand. One fine after noon in the month of September, I sought out a common conveyance, such as is used by the pea santry, to take me the first few miles of my journey; and with my knapsack in my hand I was stand ing in the court-yard of the inn ready to step into the rustic carriage, when a servant entered the court and asked if there were any opportunity for Kne. That person standing there is going straight to Kjoge, ' said the ostler of the inn. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
