This historic story of romance and tragedy revolves around one woman, the struggles in her life, and how she overcame these hardships. The arc of the story and characters are based on actual events and people. Because this unresolved and puzzling love affair generates two centuries of doubt and scorn, Interwoven into the story are present-day characters who research lost clues to resolve the mystery. It is important to tell the story of forgotten people, especially ones as impactful as Concha and Nikolai. This story begins in early Spanish California where a young woman who was born and raised in San Francisco feels trapped and isolated from the world. She is the daughter of the Presidio Commandant and is regarded as the most beautiful doncella in all of Alta California. In 1806 a ship sails into the great bay with a Russian nobleman on a very desperate mission. Concepcion (Concha) Arguello and Nikolai Rezanov allegedly fall in love and plan to marry. Aside from their age difference, there are significant and complex barriers of politics, religion, world turmoil, and family they must contend with. There was a great deal of skepticism about this affair throughout much of 19th century California; after all, Concha wanted to escape California, yet Nikolai wanted to plant the Tsar's flag here. Concha wished to see the world's great cities and institutions while Nikolai saw California as a Garden of Eden that could supplement Russia's colony in Alaska. The arc of this story also follows a present-day professor who is seeking answers to this unresolved scandal. In old California Mission days, there was little news of the outside world, and boredom was an aching reminder of isolation. The one joyous pastime was their fandangos with lively dancing to break the monotony. Two hundred years later the professor finds archival materials containing musical notations written by a mysterious character, as well as old documents and notes that shed new light on this debated romance of long ago and answers the question; did they truly love one another? This is not a romantic novel per se, but a story of a devoted but unfulfilled love and a life set in difficult times. The hardships and uncertainty faced by Concepcion and Nikolai will resonate with the reader.

Twenty-first-century monastic communities represent unique social environments in which music plays an integral part. This book examines the role of music in Catholic, Anglican/Episcopalian and neo-monastic communities in Britain and North America, engaging closely with communities of practice to provide a penetrating insight into the role of music in self-care and as a vector for identity construction on both individual and community levels. The author explores the essential role of music in community dynamics, the rationale for using instruments, the implications of both chant-based and freestyle composition, gender-related differences in musical activity, the role of dance (‘music made visible’) in community life, the commodification of monastic music, the ‘Singing Nun’ phenomenon and the role of music in established and emerging neo-monastic communities. The result is a comprehensive and compelling study of the agency of music in the construction and expression of personal and community identity.

At the age of five, Mary Jane Masterson's destiny was foretold by a stranger. "That one," said the Brother of Holy Cross, pointing at Mary Jane as he sat comfortably in their living room with her mother, "will be a nun." His prediction, repeated in later years by other friends and acquaintances, became reality when, in 1946 at the age of eighteen, Mary Jane joined the Sisters of St. Joseph and became a "bride of Christ." She adapted quickly to religious life, sharing prayer and living quarters with other nuns, an "elitist group" considered by many in the secular world to have far more than secular access to God's love, a belief encouraged by Vatican I. But as the Second Vatican Council came to a close in 1965, a shift in theology shook Sister Mary Jane to her very core. Had she sacrificed marriage, sex, and children of her own for nothing? Follow Sister Mary Jane on her journey from her calling to the noblest of vocations to her acceptance of how, as a nun, she could affect the world beyond her community and her school.

All three books in 'DaDa Detective Agency', a series of mystery novels by Pete Adams, now in one volume! Road Kill: In the genteel, upper middle-class community of Southsea, Portsmouth, cataclysmic events unfold, culminating in a violent clash featuring a Sherman tank and a bazooka. Investigating the strange occurrence is Lord Everard Pimple, an inexperienced aristocrat who unwittingly stumbles into a world of feminine charms and a host of unforeseen complications. As Everard's life spins out of control, he remains oblivious to the looming danger that threatens to level his world. Will he survive the fallout? Rite Judgement: In the aftermath of Sister Winfrede's gruesome murder, the police and MI5 are called in to investigate a string of increasingly bizarre deaths that hint at a connection to something sinister. Even as more bodies pile up, one victim, Bea Flat, inexplicably returns from the dead to conduct the orchestra. Jack Austin and the DaDa Detective Agency are at the center of this surreal tale of crime, myth, and legend, where reality and illusion blur and hope prevails despite the chaos. Rite Judgement is a story of good versus evil, and the human capacity for belief in the face of uncertainty. Blood Sport: As Jack and Mandy return home from a Rite of Spring dance in London, they speak with Jack's son, Angie, who, like his father, is considered inept in the field of crime-solving. But when Angie is tasked with investigating council planning decisions, he uncovers a web of corporate greed and a sinister organization called Hegemon that threatens the coastal resources of Portsmouth. With his father's analytical genes, Angie becomes a defender of democracy, taking on surreal and unexpected challenges. 'Blood Sport', the third book in Pete Adams's DaDa Detective Agency series, is a comedic yet serious tale of conspiracy and the power of inherited traits.
