Excerpt from The Cradle of the Aryans The following Essay is a paper originally communicated, necessarily in abridged form, to the members of the Liverpool Literary and Philosophical Society, and is an attempt to give a clear account of present controversies regarding the origin, local and racial, of the Aryan stock. It makes no claim to original discoveries in the field of language; but it embodies the results of somewhat extensive reading, mainly in German authorities; it gives a much fuller account than as yet exists in English of the latest Continental theories; and it presses some conclusions and inferences to what appears to me their legitimate issue, more closely than has been done by previous writers. I give it separate publication, thinking it may be of use to other students in the field of language. The better to fulfil this end, in the sections dealing with vocabulary I have systematically inserted in brackets some familiar representative of the term discussed; where this is not done, it is to be understood that the English word itself represents the stem in question. This, with the comparative tables introduced, will make it easy to check etymological statements, without uncertainty and loss of time. To gain compactness, I have refrained from not a few tempting digressions, and confined myself to categorical statement, with or without supporting reference in the notes. Excerpt from The Mythology of the Aryan Nationas Denoting not one or two objects only, as the sun or moon, but all the phenomena of the sensible world, as they impressed themselves on the minds of primitive men. It has not been my object to give an exhaustive account of the myths of every branch of the Aryan race. To ascribe equal value and interest to the traditions of all the tribes included within the great Aryan family would indeed be absurd. But in the. Excerpt from The Origin of the Aryans: An Account of the Prehistoric Ethnology and Civilization of Europe The last ten years have seen a revolution in the opinion of scholars as to the region in which the Aryan race originated, and theories which not long ago were universally accepted as the well-established conclusions of science now hardly find a defender. In Germany several works have been devoted exclusively to the subject, but no English book has yet appeared giving an account of the state of the controversy, and embodying the results recently arrived at by philologists, archaeologists, and anthropologists. Excerpt from The Aryan Race: Its Origins and Its Achievements Any attempt, indeed, to tell the story of the Aryan race, even in outline, during the recent age of mankind would be equivalent to an attempt to write the history of civilization, - which is far from our purpose. But in the comparison of the intellectual conditions and products of the several races of mankind, and in the consideration of the evolution of human institutions and lines of thought and action, we have a field of research which is by no means exhausted, and with which the general world of readers is very little con versant. Our work will therefore be found to be largely comparative in treatment, the characteristics and conditions of the other leading races of mankind being considered, and contrasted with those of the Aryan, with the purpose not only of clearly showing the general superiority of the latter, but also of point ing out the natural steps of evolution through which it emerged from original savagery and attained to its present intellectual supremacy and advanced stage of enlightenment.
