Compatibility and corrosion rates of nine welded alloys of aluminum, nickel and stainless steel, stressed and unstressed, in ClF3, ClO3F and 25% ClO3F-75% ClF3 at 30 and 66 C were investigated. Corrosion rates at 30 C were all less than 0.1 mil/yr. At 66 C, corrosion in ClF3 and Halox 25 was less than 0.1 mil/yr except for Type 410 S.S. (1-2.2 mil/yr). In ClO3F at 66 C corrosion was normally below 0.5 mil/yr, but with moisture present, rates up to 8.3 mil/yr were observed. No change in mechanical properties and no stress cracking due to oxidizer corrosion occurred. There was no interface corrosion. In an ambient temperature, high-pressure loop, liquid flows of ClF3 and ClO3F at 100 ft/sec through orfices in aluminum, nickel and stainless steel caused no erosion. A Teflon orifice was attacked by ClF3. Liquid impingement jets of ClF3 and ClO3F at 100 ft/sec had no effect on these metals except for a slight pit in aluminum 2014-T6 with ClF3. Liquid cavitation of ClF3 and ClO3F in an aluminum tube caused no metal change. (Author).

NSA is a comprehensive collection of international nuclear science and technology literature for the period 1948 through 1976, pre-dating the prestigious INIS database, which began in 1970. NSA existed as a printed product (Volumes 1-33) initially, created by DOE's predecessor, the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). NSA includes citations to scientific and technical reports from the AEC, the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration and its contractors, plus other agencies and international organizations, universities, and industrial and research organizations. References to books, conference proceedings, papers, patents, dissertations, engineering drawings, and journal articles from worldwide sources are also included. Abstracts and full text are provided if available.

The memorandum summarizes the available information on the compatibility of liquid rocket propellants with prominent materials of construction. Fuels and oxidizers of current interest are discussed. The corrosion data which are presented will apply to storing, handling, and control equipment outside of missiles and to missile components excluding combustion chamber. The compatibility of materials with reaction products in combustion chambers, nozzles, etc., is not considered. Included in the summary are data for many nonmetallic materials. The memorandum is subdivided into sections according to the propellant. Each material of construction is rated for a given medium as belonging to one of four classes, based primarily upon corrosion resistance. Consideration also is given to such factors as catalytic decomposition and sensitivity to impact.
