Excerpt from The Character of the Gentleman The students of Miami University, in the State of Ohio, did me the honor of inviting me, during the past summer, to deliver an address on the even ing before their Commencement Day. I had never visited that teeming region of the spreading West, and gladly accepted the invitation. The address was printed, according to custom, and I was fur nished with a liberal supply of copies, not sufficient, however, to satisfy all persons who seemed desirous of perusing it. Repeated prepositions to republish it were made; but they would not have induced me to venture upon a second edition of so fugitive a composition, had not some trustees and many stu dents of our own institution desired me to do it. Excerpt from The Character of the Gentleman: An Address to the Students of Miami University, on the Evening Before Commencement Day, in the Month of August, 1846 My Dear Sir: I have to express to you, on behalf of the young gentlemen of the University, at whose request your excellent Address of last evening was delivered, their sense of the obligation under which you have laid them, by your kind compliance with their invitation, and to request that you will add a further favour to that already conferred, by furnishing a copy for the press. It affords me great pleasure to make this communication, and I take the liberty to express the hope that you will accede to this request. I am, dear sir, with great respect and esteem, yours, &c. E. D. MacMaster. Francis Lieber, Esq., LL. D. My Dear Sir: It gives me much pleasure that the young gentlemen of Miami University consider the subject, on which I have written an Address to them, of sufficient importance to wish the publication of my thoughts on it. My Address is entirely at their service, and I beg you to express to them my best acknowledgments for the kindly and favourable feelings with which they view my imperfect composition. Excerpt from The Gentleman Let no bedressed, bescented passer curl his lip at this impudent theft of an epithet claimed as property of his favored few. On the part of the auctioneer there is no theft: on the part of the scornful passer there may be usurpa tion. The auctioneer necessarily, unconscious ly, speaks under sway of the advanced senti ment, which recognizes that within every Christian heart live the germs of that high Ideal, the manifestation of which in moving, incorporate reality receives the choice name of gentleman. The universal giving and ao cepting of this name is a homage to the beau ty of what the name represents, - an aspira tion, however remote and modest, for the pos session of the refined substance. Excerpt from John Halifax, Gentleman Gentleman made its appearance in the old-fashioned three volume form, down to the present time the work has never lost its popularity. Immediately the book appeared it was a marked success. Miss Mulock, as every novelist must do, was addressing her own age, and her characters were the types and individuals she had known or Observed, and yet such is the clear honesty of purpose in the book that the lapse of over half a century has not materially weakened its influence. Excerpt from The Portraiture of a Christian Gentleman Amidst so much stirring and strife of opinion, boldness of speculation, and contest for dis tinction, a pious individual is to comport him self, in all his relations and transactions, so as to reconcile and unite in one vocation and system of behaviour the duties and habits proper to the Christian Gentleman, it is the object of this little manual to explain. It is not Christianity in ordinary life, but Christi anity in a special relation and connexion, that will be the subject of its inquiry. Neglecting the plains and valleys, it will confine its views to the garden border, where the lily on its graceful stalk exposes its petals to the sun, and to the hills where the cedar throws around its lofty shade. That the Christian loses nothing by being a gentleman, and that the gentleman gains greatly by being a Christian, may be gathered from the history of our own country. In various proportions, and in various degrees, the union has probably subsisted in the lives of many eminent persons who have ourished in remote periods; but time has cast into the shade the delicate traces of character in which this coa. Excerpt from The Pretty Gentleman: Or, Softness of Manners Vindicated From the False Ridicule Exhibited Under the Character of William Fribble, Esq. HE Theatre is said to be the proper School for correcting the little Irregularities and Foibles of Mankind; and no Method is held more likely to check the Growth of Folly, than to bring it to full View in Scenes of humorous Representa tion. But then the Comic Writer should be certain, that what he endeavours to expose, be really an Object of Ridicule; otherwise he not only offends against the Rules of the Drama, but the Precepts of Virtue. Excerpt from A Gentleman's Gentleman I have met a good many in my time who pro fessed to know a lot about Sir Nicolas Steele. I am not going to contradict them here, nor do I Wish to write the life of a man whom I have served, on and ce, for more years than I care to remember. If ever that's to be done, it must be the business of one who got his learning at school. All that I can speak about is that which I saw with my own eyes and heard with my own ears during the days when I was servant to him. And if my word can do any thing to set him right before the world, in SO far as he can be set right, I give that word willingly, as is his due.
