This research examines the role of Cantonese in Guangzhou society and young people’s feelings toward the language in light of the continued push for a universal Chinese language, Mandarin. Since the 1950s, China has reformed language under the slogan of “one nation with diversity”, which also includes linguistic diversity. However, this concept of diversity is often confined to certain areas; languages other than Mandarin are mostly spoken in private domains while Mandarin is reserved for all public and official domains. This greatly affects the popularity of dialects and the perceptions of these languages by members of the society; many native speakers of dialects fear that their languages are facing endangerment. This study examines the practical application of the Cantonese language and language attitudes of students and professionals between 18 and 30 years old through the use of a survey and the Matched-Guise Test; 66 people participated in the survey and 30 people participated in the Matched-Guise Test. Despite the fact that the practical application of Mandarin on its own is most common, young people in Guangzhou prefer to use a mix of both languages and generally have positive attitudes toward Cantonese.

Abstract: As the lexical inventories of Hong Kong Cantonese and Guangzhou Cantonese are different, this paper attempts at studying the changes of the lexicon used by a special group of university students in Hong Kong who came from Guangzhou 4 years ago. These students were from The Chinese University of Hong Kong and The Hong Kong Institute of Education and all of their mother tongue was Cantonese. In this research, two picture naming tasks were conducted to examine if these students had experienced changes in their Cantonese lexical inventories. The results were presented based on the comparison of the number of Guangzhou Cantonese lexicon and Hong Kong Cantonese lexicon they used in the picture naming tasks. Besides, follow-up individual interviews were involved to investigate the motives which drove them to change their lexical inventories. Some quotes from the participants worth considering were listed in this paper. It was found that different participants had changed their lexical inventories to various extents. Referring to the research data, the reasons that may cause people to change their lexical inventories were explored and discussed. There have been a number of studies on the changes of pronunciation that people have experienced as young adults. However, not much research has been done on the changes of the use of lexicon after the critical period for language acquisition. It is expected that this paper can illuminate the issues of lexicon changes in young adulthood and highlight the reasons behind people's lexicon changes across the lifespan. Cantonese is the only dialect of Chinese which has developed a widely known and used written form. It has played a role in publishing in the Guangdong region since the late Ming dynasty when various types of verses using Cantonese were published as mu yu shu (‘wooden fish books’). In the early twentieth century these dialect texts were joined by Cantonese opera scripts, published as popular reading material. However, it was only after the end of the Second World War that written Cantonese came to be widely used in popular newspapers and magazines, advertising, and in the private communications. Cantonese as Written Language examines this development in the broader context of diglossia, and also of the patterns by which spoken vernaculars have developed written forms in other societies. Based on primary source research, including interviews with publishers and writers who played an important role in the growth of written Cantonese, the author argues that this move of Cantonese into the realm of written language is closely associated with Hong Kong's distinct local culture and identity. The growth of the written vernacular also reflects the territory's evolving cultural distinctiveness from mainland China, first as a British colony, and now as a Special Administrative Region of China.

Firstly, a statistical study is conducted to describe the social variation of the language attitudes toward VWC. The results suggest that the positive attitude toward VWC in Guangzhou is restricted to the informal and casual domains. The best strategy to maintain the vitality of VWC in Guangzhou community is to let it develop naturally. Furthermore, VWC has social value as a marker of cultural solidarity in Guangzhou city, a vital sign of its maintenance.

GIVE is a versatile morpheme in many languages. While there have been extensive studies on the interplay between the syntax and semantics of GIVE in many languages, not much has been done in a similar manner on Cantonese, a member of the Yue dialect group of the Chinese language family. This monograph reports on the study of GIVE and its associated functions and syntactic constructions in Cantonese from diachronic, synchronic, and typological perspectives. Drawing on cross-linguistic data, and 19th century Cantonese dialect materials, this study first traces the chronological development of the various functions played by GIVE in Cantonese. It then examines the double-object construction. Besides the typological features of this construction in Cantonese, this study investigates the use of the northern pattern in Cantonese as a result of the increasing influence of Putonghua and Modern Standard Chinese by means of a sociolinguistic survey with 40 native speakers of Cantonese.
