Excerpt from The Brown Rot of the Lemon It. Will be necessary to give a brief consideration to this subject for the better understanding of what is to follow. The lemon, like other citrus fruits, is an evergreen tree of semi-tropic habit, somewhat more easily affected by frost than the orange. As already stated the tree is peculiar in producing its fruit all the year round; that is to say, at almost any time in the year mature fruit, blossoms, and fruit in all stages of development may be found on the same tree. (see cover illustration.) Inasmuch as winter is the usual season of maturity of citrus fruits, a time when lemons are least in demand, this is a very valuable feature. There is a tendency to produce the bulk of the crop in winter and spring, especially in some varieties like the Lisbon, which feature is not at all desirable from the standpoint of the grower. Excerpt from The Brown Moth Lola Kargo came drifting down Sixth Avenue. She was utterly miserable. I And the desolation of this stretch of the avenue while it didn't frighten her, filled her with dismay much as would a vast room which was dark and empty. Great walls on either side dwarfed her, shut her in - great lofty expanses of vacant windows stared down on her. For these were the department stores which ten years before, five years before, huge and bloated, had gloried in their prosperity and reared their bulk arrogantly in the belief that they would for ever constitute New York's shopping centre. But despite their solidity the restless city like a wave rushing on had left their standing here, deserted fortresses of a trade which had vanished. Excerpt from The Brown Papers With the bed took from under her, as is a painful position I should say, tho' p'raps them as is used to it don't feel it, as would be my death, to say nothing of the disgrace, as I'm sure sure some people ain't no teelin', or that mrs. Warne never could have had the face for to put up Genteel Apartments, when her place was a downright dog hole, and as to twelve shillings a week, it was highway robbery downright; and no wonder as parties always bolted, tho' as to her a-saying as that brought her to ruin, it's rubbish, for if ever there was a woman as took a drop, she was the party, a-sendin' out the girl for it all hours, downright brazen, as a bottle in the apron always looks bad in my opinion; but if you want to know any more about me ask the neighbours right and left, and you'll hear a plenty, as I've had to threaten with the law once or twice; so you look out as you don't go a-printing any things as is like a label on me, for I've got friends in the law, thro' one a-being a porter at a law stationer's these fifteen years, and my own nlece's boy is in chambers in the Temple, as is a easy place at six shillings a week, tho' lonesome, thro' the gentleman always a-promising to be back in [ten minutes, and never a-turning up no more. Mind, I don't want none of your flattering butter, a-talking about my wirtues, and as to your a-sayin' as people likes me, that's fall very well, but why ever shouldn't they, as never did them no 'arm, nor wouldn't hurt a fly was it ever so? Only, whatever you say, don't ge about a-statin' as isn't true, for I never had a con sumption, as you meant for to hawk me about onbook-stalls, tho' I'm sure there's a many I could give ideas to in welcome, as don't seem to have none in their own heads; tho' Iwill say as book-learnin' don't do much good, except to them as has their senses about 'em, and then books isn't necessary; but parties 'as often told me as I spoke like a book, as I'm sure any one is welcome for to hear. So no more at present, thro' mr. Giddens, as I've got to write it, being obligated for to go, and I 'turns him many thanks thro' 'aving took that pains over it, and remains, yours respectful. Taught everywhere—from high school classrooms to graduate seminars in creative writing—it has become required reading for any American and continues to challenge readers in their perceptions of fact and fiction, war and peace, courage and fear and longing. The Things They Carried won France's prestigious Prix du Meilleur Livre Etranger and the Chicago Tribune Heartland Prize; it was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award.
