Not illustrated. 1881 edition. Excerpt: ...magistratus quem vergobretum appellant Edui, qui creatur annuus, et vita: nccisque in suos habet postestatem.' The law against re-election comes out in vii. 32, 33. Pomponius Mela (iii. 2) marks their position very emphatically: 'Aquitanorum clarissimi sunt Ausci, Ccltarum Aldui, Belgarum Treveri, urbes ue opulentissimw, in Treveris Augusta, in E uis Augustodunum, in Auscis Climberrum.' See the note in the Recueil, i. 51. We are concerned only with Augusta and Augustodunum. _ 1-Bell. Gall. vi. 12. The resultof the changes is 'Ut longi principes haberentur Edui, secundum locum dignitatis Remi obtinerent.' The Sequan are thus altogether put aside. SceStrabo, iv. 3, where he makes an odd confusion as to the rivers Saone and Doubs. tlbid. vi. 12: 'Summa auctoritas antiquitus mrat in Alduis, magnaeque eorum erant clientelae.' He goes on using the wordas a technical term. rones at Tours, the Senones at Sens, the Bituriges alike in Bourgea the city and in Ber-ry the land. But the...
