Kids that grew up in the small southern Iowa town of Milo truly had a walk in the park during their childhood. There was so much to enjoy during those tender years as Little Leaguers, Boy Scouts, high school athletes, or members of the school band. Hunting and fishing with friends occupied nearly every weekend and filled those treasured moments with unforgettable memories. That all changed when America became involved in the Vietnam War, and the boys of Milo were called to join the military. Soon to be lost would be the innocence of their youth. From 1960 to 1975, nearly two-thirds of the young men from this tightly knit community departed their tranquil town and became soldiers. Many served overseas to include Southeast Asia. Some did not return home. Many came back with visible battle scars and Purple Hearts pinned on their chest. Many returned with hidden wounds, buried deep within their soul that haunted them for years. The Boys of Milo is a true account of the events that impacted these young men on their journey to far-flung parts of the United States and the world during an exceedingly difficult time in American history. Some of their stories are humorous, others are so gripping they defy believability. All, however, are true accounts as now told by old men. Their stories allow those who knew them to remember and for all to understand them. Consider what God has done: Who can straighten what he has made crooked? When times are good, be happy: but when times are bad, consider God has made the one as well as the other. Therefore, a man cannot discover anything about his future. — Ecclesiastes 7:13–15

Maggi is an excellent adventurer, a pretty good songwriter, an aspiring scientist, and Milo's best friend. Milo is a Border Collie, and he's very smart. When Maggi gets a book about frogs from her grandma, naturally, she decides to take Milo to find frogs the very next day. But it turns out that catching frogs is hard work. Lucky for Maggi, Milo is there to help. And lucky for Milo, even though Maggi’s not the world’s best frog hunter, she’s the kind of friend who makes everything a little more fun. With the spunk of Ladybug Girl and an illustration style suggestive of Charles Schulz, Maggi and Milo are an irresistible pair with a whole lot of charm.

About the Book In the Appalachian foothills, Judy and her three young boys are left to fend for themselves while her husband leaves for work on a sheep ranch out west. Life isn’t easy in the Hawkins house during Ken’s absence, and Judy struggles to survive and provide for her sons, helped only occasionally by her brother-in-law, who also happens to be her former lover. Stark necessity and a determination to keep her family alive and safe forces Judy to make unorthodox —and often immoral—decisions. And times become increasingly difficult as her boys encounter violence, death, alcoholism and tobacco abuse as they come of age in the isolation of the Appalachia foothills in the 1950s. About the Author Bill Lawson grew up in an impoverished family of fourteen in the rural Appalachians of Virginia in the 1950s and ‘60s. He worked his way to a bachelor’s degree in education and taught English in Florida before joining the Air Force in 1970, where he became trained as a medical technologist. In the years that followed, he settled in the Spokane, Washington, area and worked for a number of hospitals. He enrolled in the University of Washington Physician Assistant Program and worked as a family practice PA until his retirement in 2017. He now enjoys camping, hiking, fishing, reading, and writing fiction based on his experiences growing up in the Appalachians. He still resides in Spokane with his wife, Stephanie, who he refers to as the center of his universe.
