With his life literally hanging from a slender rope over a crevasse near the top of a Himalayan mountain, a young man relives in his mind a relentless two-year physical and spiritual test as a Peace Corps volunteer in a remote mountain village of Nepal.Combining the elements of adventure story, travel log, and personal confession, this absorbing account describes a wrenching experience that belies the idealistic expectations of many Peace Corps volunteers.Following a two-year stint as a science and mathematics teacher in a Nepalese village, Phil Deutschle sets off alone on a three-month expedition to conquer Pharchamo, 20,580 feet high, which has claimed several lives and is his final goal in the Himalayas. This trek forms the framework of the book, and into it Deutschle weaves the story of his experiences over the previous two years in a series of sharply etched, swiftly moving, often humorous anecdotes.Deutschle is not starry-eyed about Nepal and its people or, least of all, about the mission of the Peace Corps. He vividly describes events that are both horrible and poignant: being charged by a rhinoceros, the awful fascination of watching a corpse burn on a funeral pyre, the struggle to save a child's life, scaling a Himalayan peak higher than Mount McKinley (the highest mountain in North America). Despite his difficulties, he steels himself to stay one year, then the full two years, and, imperceptibly, grows so attached to the village that he leaves it in tears.Mourning the "small death" of his departure, confused about his identity as an American, and feeling more alienated than before, he sets off on a final, reckless, solo climb of Mount Pharchamo, hardly caring whether he survives. Apathetic from lack of oxygen and from his own malaise and only when his life literally hangs on a slender rope, does he overcome despair and make a gigantic effort to save himself. The two parts of the book - the emotional challenge of the village and physical challenge of the climb - come together in a triumphant affirmation of life.A native Californian, Phil Deutschle is currently teaching handicapped children in Denmark. The Two Year Mountain was originally published by Bradt in 1986 and remains as relevant to the spirit of exploration and real, raw travel writing today as it was then.

Even most Nepalese people have not ventured into the Dolpo and Mustang regions, which are highlighted in this travelogue. Prateek Dhakal, the countrys most renowned travelouge writer, reveals the beautiful scenery of these regions, beginning with a helicopter ride where he sees cliffs, valleys, forests, rivers, and rivulets sprouting from narrow valleys. Only occasionally does he see human settlements. It is mostly cliffs and hills. Once on the ground, he sees some villages mired in poverty. Children run around in torn clothes amid heaps of fresh stools. But other places are beautiful, like one village with a grand and majestic lake. Theres a sign in two languagesNepali and Englishby the lake that reads, Lord Buddha resides in this sacred lake. Please do not contaminate the lake. He sees women fetching water in pitchers from the lake, and it is pristine. Join the author as he crosses dozens of rivers and countless valleys and enjoys breathtaking scenery in Beyond the Himalayas.

Throughout 1949 and 1950 H.W. `Bill¿ Tilman mounted pioneering expeditions to Nepal and its Himalayan mountains, taking advantage of some of the first access to the country for Western travellers in the 20th century. Tilman and his party¿including a certain Tenzing Norgay¿trekked into the Kathmandu Valley and on to the Langtang region, where the highs and lows began. They first explored the Ganesh Himal, before moving on to the Jugal Himal and the following season embarking on an ambitious trip to Annapurna and Everest. Manaslu was their first objective, but left to `better men¿, and Annapurna IV very nearly climbed instead but for bad weather which dogged the whole expedition. Needless to say, Tilman was leading some very lightweight expeditions into some seriously heavyweight mountains. After the Annapurna adventure Tilman headed to Everest with¿ among others¿Dr Charles Houston. Approaching from the delights of Namche Bazaar, the party made progress up the flanks of Pumori to gaze as best they could into the Western Cwm, and at the South Col and South-East Ridge approach to the summit of Everest. His observations were both optimistic and pessimistic: `One cannot write off the south side as impossible until the approach from the head of the West Cwm to this remarkably airy col has been seen.¿ But then of the West Cwm: `A trench overhung by these two tremendous walls might easily become a grave for any party which pitched its camp there.¿ Nepal Himalaya presents Tilman¿s favourite sketches, encounters with endless yetis, trouble with the porters, his obsessive relationship with alcohol and issues with the food. And so Tilman departs Nepal for the last time proper with these retiring words: `If a man feels he is failing to achieve this stern standard he should perhaps withdraw from a field of such high endeavour as the Himalaya.¿

In A Trek through Nepal, Max Nadiero captures the essence of a mid-life adventure to the Himalayan Mountains of Nepal. He fills our senses with the colorful descriptions of his fellow travelers, the sherpa guides, and the porters who are hired for a pittance to carry their luggage through jungles, over treacherous mountains, and across raging rivers. His fellow trekkers come from diverse walks of life and are here for various reasons, but most wishing to prove their capabilities and their spirit of adventure. While rather out of shape when he initially begins this journey, he pushes on and becomes increasingly stronger and fitter as the trek progresses. He feels a sense of accomplishment as he moves from dead last in the ranks to the fourth place spot. In the end, there is pride from trying something outside his comfort zone that tested his mettle, his resolve, and his human strength, pushing him to his limits. These are memories he can cherish the rest of his life.
