Excerpt from The Baptist Quarterly Review, Vol. 4 Man is an interpreter, a reader of signs. His one ability and business is to understand the meaning of what he sees and hears and touches and conceives, and to use in further interpretation and action what he thus acquires. Man can not see the forces of gravity and light and heat; but he can see and feel the moving, illuminated, and bum ing objects; the rest, by experiment and reasoning, is interpretation. Man can not see the spirit of his brother man - its intelligence, passion, energy; but he can see the changing features of the face and gestures of the body; the rest, by consciousness and experience, is interpretation. Man can not see God - his power and wisdom and grace; but he can perceive the phenomena of nature, of conscious ness. Of history, through which He manifests himself whose goings-forth are from everlasting; the rest, by faith, con science, reason, reverence, and love, is interpretation. Truth, for us, is the conformity of our conceptions with the facts of existence. The facts are prior to us and inde pendent Of us. We can not essentially change them, nor mold them to our notions and will. We must take them as we find them, and apprehend them as they are, if we wish to gain a knowledge of their qualities and the use of their energies. This is but another way of saying again that man is an interpreter, not a creator, and that all knowledge is interpretation. Excerpt from The Freewill Baptist Quarterly, 1856, Vol. 4 Christianity has attained its present position in the world by means of many earnest struggles. Her march to empire has not been steady and quiet. Her progress marks the eras of human history, and many a continental convulsion has indicated the strife from which her principles have sprung into the reverent view of men. The con ict awakened by her approach to the individual heart, and which Paul so graphically pictures in his epistle to the Romans, only symbolizes the warfare appointed her by Providence on the stage of public ad'airs. Excerpt from The Freewill Baptist Quarterly, Vol. 10: Truth and Progress If all thus join with their leader in the prayers which he of fers, let them with him assume some praying posture. Let all stand on their feet, or all kneel down, or, which is the least they can do, how their heads before the Lord. For the sake of uniformity, let some one of these postures be adopted as the rule of each congregation. Where no devotional posture is assumed except by the minister, he is often depressed with the apprehension that he is the only person praying, and to all appearance such is often the case. A whole congregation sit ting ia the ordinary manner during prayer, some gazing about the room at their neighbors' faces or clothes, and if the day is warm, swinging their fans rapidly to and fro, is not apt to im press one as being very devout and prayerful, or as listening closely, with intent to follow the minister in his earnest peti tions in behalf of the people. Excerpt from The Baptist Review, Vol. 1 The question which we propose to discuss has been often asked by thoughtful men, and there is reason to suppose that many are considering it at the present time. It would, indeed, be surprising if Christians, who believe in the exist ence of an infinite God, did not give it their serious attention. And it would be no less surprising if mental philosophers, who are seeking to ascertain the extent of knowledge possible to man, did not examine it with the utmost care. The same may also be said of many persons whose minds have been perplexed by the contradictory Views of able writers on this theme. To these may be added numerous devotees of physical science, who might have been expected to feel but little interest in that which lies beyond the range of observation, but who have given much thought to this question, and are themselves ready enough to discuss it.
