Excerpt from The Awakening of Japan Okakura was, naturally, one of the promoters of the reactionary movement against the wholesale introduction of Western art and manners. This move ment was carried on by the starting of periodicals and clubs devoted to the preservation Of the Old life of Japan, the work being carried on, also, in the field Of literature and the drama. Excerpt from The Awakening of Asia This book has been held up by the Censor for more than two years. From my own standpoint, this has turned out to be an advantage, so far as its prospect of usefulness goes. Now, more than ever before, Europeans and Americans are prepared to consider the relations of the white races to Asiatics as demanding very careful study. That Japan should be fully repre sented at the Peace Conference, as one of the Great Powers of the world, and that China and India, with their joint population of some people, should claim the right to make themselves heard at the same gathering of the nations, are events which cannot be overlooked. Asia, indeed, seems destined to play a still greater part in the future than she has played in the past. It is important, therefore, for the English-speaking peoples, to whom I primarily address myself, that they should recognise this at once. Self determination and justice for all races cannot be confined to Europe or America. When first I began my serious studies of the influence of the white man on the Far East, I was of the opinion that this influence had been almost wholly beneficial. The fact that close relations of my own had been connected with Eastern affairs for several generations naturally strengthened me in this view. Excerpt from Brown Face and White: A Story of Japan A man's voice, deep and sonorous, called in the exquisite twilight of a Japanese summer evening. And the faint echo which came back from the rocky hill-side bounding the Mission House garden on its eastern side answered, Eileen! Eileen! Over the hill-crest, on the steep sides of which, here and there, beeches, larches, pines, camphor trees, and maples grew, the last rays of the setting sun had streamed in a golden and crimson glory but a very short time before; for dusky twilight follows sunset very rapidly, and the stars in the Japanese sky creep out less stealthily than with us. Excerpt from The Story of Japan Our nearest neighbor across the Pacific has been reckoned among the foremost nations of the earth ever since, in the late war with China she humiliated that vast but inert empire. Japan W111 have a voice in the future destiny of Asiatic countries, and in that of the islands of the Pacific. Our schoolbooks on geography and general history touch but lightly upon the Japanese Empire, and it is for the purpose of enabling children to obtain a cor rect idea of the people, and of the impulses leading to the rapid progress of the past quarter of a cen tury, that The Story of Japan has been written. It was deemed essential to explain repeatedly the key to the history of Japan and to the reforms of our time, by noticing the overpowering influence of the samurai of old, who were and still are the makers of the nation.
