"The following pages, of which I began the compilation when still engaged in the arduous work of repatriation of Australian troops in all theatres of war, were intended to be something in the nature of a consecutive and comprehensive story of the Australian Imperial Force in France during the closing phases of the Great War. I soon found that the time at my disposal was far too limited to allow me to make full use of the very voluminous documentary material which I had collected during the campaign. The realization of such a project must await a time of greater leisure. So much as I have had the opportunity of setting down has, therefore, inevitably taken the form rather of an individual memoir of the stirring period ... My purpose has been to describe in broad outline the part played by the Australian Army Corps in the closing months of the war, and I have based upon that record somewhat large claims on behalf of the Corps. It would have overloaded the story to include in it any larger number of extracts from original documents than has been done. I may, however, assert with confidence that the statements, statistics, and deductions made can be verified by reference to authoritative sources. The photographs have been selected from a very large number taken, during the fighting and often under fire, by Captain G. H. Wilkins, M.C. The maps have been prepared under my personal supervision, and are compiled from the official battle maps in actual use by me during the Operations"--Preface.

The final battles of the great conflict Sir John Monash, the author of this book, is widely considered to be one of the finest Allied general officers of the First World War and the most famous Australian military commander. He served during the ill-fated Gallipoli Campaign, but is most highly regarded for his service on the Western Front. In May 1918 he became commander of the Australian Corps, at that time the largest army corps in theatre. The successful attack of the Battle of Amiens in August, 1918 was planned by Monash and spearheaded by his Australians and Canadian forces together with the British III Corps. This engagement turned the tide of the war in the West comprehensively reversing Germany's Ludendorff Offensive in 1918. This book chronicles the pursuit of the retreating German Army from Chuignes, Mont St. Quentin, Peronne, Hargicourt and, following the contribution of American forces, Bellicourt, Bony and Montbrehain to the Hindenburg Line and the end of hostilities. Contains maps and photographs. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

First published in 1920, The Australian Victories in France in 1918 immediately garnered glowing praise as one of the most entertaining and informative accounts of war ever written. It is now recognised as one of the most important records of World War I, revealing the critical role Australians played on the Western Front. General Sir John Monash, regarded as the best allied commander of World War I, records his experiences leading a series of victories that turned the tide of the war, from the defence of Amiens, to the battle of August 8th and the breaking of the Hindenburg Line. He reveals the challenges he faced in leading tens of thousands of troops, and the decision-making and innovations in the field that led to their success. Republished in full, this edition features a new foreword by Bruce Haigh, colour reproductions of the original maps that were hand-drawn under Monash's supervision, and new photos. It also includes a memo from General Rawlinson congratulating Monash on the performance of the Australian Corps- 'I feel that no mere words of mine can adequately express the renown that they have won for themselves and the position they have established for the Australian nation not only in France but throughout the world.' 'From the far-off days in 1914, when the call first came, until the last shot was fired, every day was filled with loathing, horror, and distress . . . Yet it had to be, and the thought always uppermost was the earnest prayer that Australia might forever be spared such a horror on her own soil.' John Monash
