Excerpt from The American Pioneer, 1843, Vol. 2 IN presenting this volume to its readers, it is perhaps necessary just to say that the objects presented in the first volume will be pursued with increased ardor, and, it is to be hoped, with better effect. We have become, if possible, more thoroughly convinced of the necessity that exists for a work of this kind. It is our intention not to continue articles from one number to another where it can be avoided. In order to enable us to give long and interesting articles entire, but most especially to favor subscribers, we have arranged to increase the size of each number: for particulars, see volume I, page 440. Our American Chronology and Table of Indian Tribes must necessarily be continued; and when these reach one hundred years nearer our time, not only the tables themselves but the work also, will become more interesting. Excerpt from The American Freedman, Vol. 2: February, 1868 Dear friend: I have the Opportunity of telling you that our school improves. Our teacher is doing all that she can do for us, and we ought to do better. She teaches us to have manners, and to treat every body well not to be saucy to our parents, or to any old person, nor to ever be cross to any of ou brothers or sisters. I have a third reader, a spelling-book, and a slate, and I can write on it. I can read and write. I study hard to improve as I learn. I have stopped going to school. I do not go to school in the winter. I have been going to school a year and a half, and I am going to school in the summer. Christmas soon will be here, and I hope that you will enjoy yourself very much indeed. The snow is here, and the people will have nice times in sleighing. I see a great many sleighs in the day-time. I never was in a sleigh to ride but once. I hope that you will get a sleigh ride. The weather is very bad under foot. It has been very moderate for two days, so that it does not stop my teacher. I am afraid she will get sick going out in the bad weather. I will be very sorry if she does. I love my teacher very much. Please to excuse my writing. Please to write to me. The antebellum period has long been identified with the belated emergence of a truly national literature. And yet, as Meredith L. McGill argues, a mass market for books in this period was built and sustained through what we would call rampant literary piracy: a national literature developed not despite but because of the systematic copying of foreign works. Restoring a political dimension to accounts of the economic grounds of antebellum literature, McGill unfolds the legal arguments and political struggles that produced an American "culture of reprinting" and held it in place for two crucial decades. In this culture of reprinting, the circulation of print outstripped authorial and editorial control. McGill examines the workings of literary culture within this market, shifting her gaze from first and authorized editions to reprints and piracies, from the form of the book to the intersection of book and periodical publishing, and from a national literature to an internally divided and transatlantic literary marketplace. Through readings of the work of Dickens, Poe, and Hawthorne, McGill seeks both to analyze how changes in the conditions of publication influenced literary form and to measure what was lost as literary markets became centralized and literary culture became stratified in the early 1850s. American Literature and the Culture of Reprinting, 1834-1853 delineates a distinctive literary culture that was regional in articulation and transnational in scope, while questioning the grounds of the startlingly recent but nonetheless powerful equation of the national interest with the extension of authors' rights.

Excerpt from The Pioneers, or the Sources of the Susquehanna, Vol. 2 of 2: A Descriptive Tale Several weeks were consumed in this cheerless' manner, during which the inhabitants of the coun try gradually changed their pursuits from the so cial and bustling movements of the time of snow, to the laborious and domestic engagements of the coming season. The village was no longer thronged with vigitei*s; the trade, that had enlivened the shops for several months, begun to disappear; the highways lost their shining coats of beaten snow in impassable sloughs, and were deserted by the gay and noisy travellers who, in sleighs, had, do ring the winter, glided along their windings; and, in short, every thing seemed indicative ofa mighty change, not only in the earth itself, but in those, also, who derived their sources of comfort and happiness from her bosom. Excerpt from Original Contributions to the American Pioneer Although no attack was ever made on the fort by the Indians, yet they often appeared on the hill in its rear, which commanded a full view of its interior. From this elevation they often watched the movements of the inhabitants as they went out to work in their gar dens and adjoining fields, and several were killed within gun shot of the garrison. Of these tragical events no one possesses more inter est than that ia which the Hon. R. J. Meigs, late governor of Ohio, was engaged - it is as follows.
