Excerpt from The American Monthly Magazine, 1833, Vol. 1 In fact, the operations of the body and of the mind, - of physical and of moral conduct, are observed to keep upon a continual parallel; and it must be evident that, in both cases, an invariable discipline must be enforced, if we hope for beneficial results either to ourselves or to the community. Voluntary labor however, in either case, is seldom incurred, and then only by such as reflection has previously and deeply convinced of its advantages. Excerpt from The American Monthly Magazine, Vol. 1: April, 1829 We shall take no side in Politics. Our pages will be open to fair and manly discussion on every political topic, and by men of every party. We shall, as in criticism, admit nothing personal, and we shall claim, of course, the right of regulating for ourselves, the standard of merit. We believe it is possible to make our magazine a vehicle of truth, without reference to party, and to advance or oppose a measure without committing ourselves to those interested in its success or failure. Our Miscellaneous Department will be open to articles of eve'ry description calculated to interest or amuse. We solicit contributions from the grave and the gay, the essayist upon character, and the satirist upon manners. Descriptions of other countries, and of our own, sprightly Journals, Sketches of picturesque scenery, Tales, ' Tradi tions - everything that can convey a moral, or amuse innocently, will be welcome. Excerpt from The American Monthly Magazine and Critical Review, 1817, Vol. 1 It was in vain that, after reading the poem of Christabel, we resorted to the preface to consult the poet himself about his meaning. He tells us only that which, however important, doubt less, in itself, throws very little light up on the mysteries of the poem, viz. That great part of the poem was written in the year 1797, at Stowey, in the county of Somerset: the second part, after his return from Germany, in the year 1800, at Keswich, in Cumberland. Since the latter date my poetic powers, says the author, have been till very lately in a state of suspended animation. Now we cannot but suspect that there is a little anachronism in this statement, and that in truth it was during this sus pense of the author's poetical powers, that this wild and singularly original and beautiful poem of Christabel was conceived and partly executed. Excerpt from The American Monthly Magazine and Critical Review, Vol. 1: May-October, 1817 Christabel. Could Lord Byron, the author of this pithy sentence, show us wherein consists its singular beauty? This is the only specimen we have yet seen of his lordship's critical powers; but from the experience we hate had of his lordship's taste in these matters, we do not think he could give a-better account of the principles of his admira tion, or dilate with better success on the meaning of his sententious eulogium, than the bookseller who has borrowed its magical influence in all his adret tisements ofthis poem.
