Excerpt from The American Journal of Psychology, Vol. 12: October, 1900 It is indeed strange that this erect attitude of the human body, which conjoins with it the discharge of the highest faculties of man, has not been heretofore a subject of more ex tended investigation. It is the purpose of this study to trace the various stages and attitudes assumed by the infant and the movements which it employs in passing from this helpless stage of infancy to the time when the straightness and uprightness of body is taken. The data upon which this study is based, has been carefully selected from Medical Journals, Hospital Reports, and from the returns of a syllabus on the Straightness and Uprightness of Body. These returns have been the direct observations of in dividual cases and the writer has sought to verify the results by personal observations. Excerpt from The American Journal of Psychology, 1893, Vol. 5 The purpose of the present investigation was to test the accuracy of earlier experiments and to throw new light on some aspects of the subject. The experiments were made in the laboratory of Professor Ebbinghaus, in Berlin, beginning in May, 1890, and extending to February, 1891. The labora tory consists of a single room; this made it impossible for the reactor and the one who conducted the experiments to be separated. There was no conversation, however, during the progress of the experiments, except as the reactor said worthless when some abnormal conditions made the value of a certain reaction doubtful. The work was carried on late in the afternoon and in the evening, when the sur roundings were quiet. A signal always preceded the excita tion by about three fourths of a second.
